South Korea's Stock Market Ranks 6th Globally... Samsung Electronics Overtakes Meta to Rank 10th Globally
Bloomberg: "South Korean Stock Market Overtakes India to Rank 6th"
Surge of 86% This Year, Approaching $5 Trillion
Samsung Electronics also closed up more than 3%, ranking 10th globally
[Edaily Reporter Kwon Oh-seok] The domestic stock market’s standing has risen amid the upward trend of major semiconductor stocks, led by #SamsungElectronics and #SKHynix. Market attention is further focused on Samsung Electronics as analysis suggests it has secured a spot among the top 10 global companies by market capitalization. (Photo by Reporter Lee Young-hoon) According to Bloomberg on the 2nd, the market capitalization of the Korean stock market has risen to 6th place globally, surpassing India. The total market capitalization of the Korean stock market surged 86% this year to reach $5 trillion (approximately 7,576 trillion won). In contrast, the Indian stock market has fallen nearly 9% since the start of the year due to a weak rupee, outflows of foreign capital, and a lack of tech companies directly linked to AI infrastructure, causing its market capitalization to shrink to around $4.8 trillion (approximately 7,272 trillion won). It can be interpreted that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which recently joined the $1 trillion market cap club, have driven the rise in the Korean stock market. Bloomberg explained that this demonstrates investors are concentrating their bets on AI and key suppliers, noting that Korea, along with Taiwan, is rewriting the global stock market rankings based on its overwhelming influence in the AI economy as one of Asia’s two major semiconductor production hubs. In particular, Samsung Electronics’ strong performance is seen as a result of global investors’ expectations for AI semiconductor demand combined with prospects for improved earnings. According to an analysis by the overseas market capitalization statistics site “CompaniesMarketCap.com” on the same day, Samsung Electronics’ stock price closed up by around 3% based on the Korea Exchange, bringing its market capitalization to approximately $1.56 trillion (about 2,107.5834 trillion won). As a result, Samsung Electronics surpassed Meta Platforms (market capitalization of approximately $1.524 trillion), the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, moving up one spot from 11th to 10th in the global ranking of publicly traded companies. It is reported that at one point during the trading session, the stock price rose by more than 6%, briefly surpassing Tesla, which ranks 9th in terms of market capitalization. The top spot among global publicly traded companies is held by the U.S. semiconductor firm NVIDIA ($5.434 trillion). Ranks 2 through 5 are held by Alphabet ($4.513 trillion), Apple ($4.498 trillion), Microsoft ($3.42 trillion), and Amazon ($2.81 trillion). However, SK Hynix’s stock price fell 0.13% on the day, reducing its market capitalization to $1.104 trillion and causing it to slip from 12th to 13th place.
