[Edaily Reporter Shin Su-jeong] #Lotte Chilsung Beverage announced on the 4th that it reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 6,400 tons last year through measures such as improving energy efficiency and expanding the use of renewable energy. Since declaring its goal of carbon neutrality by 2040 in 2021, Lotte Chilsung Beverage has been pursuing initiatives such as expanding renewable energy, switching fuels, and introducing electric vehicles. Last year, total greenhouse gas emissions decreased by approximately 7% compared to the previous year and by approximately 17% compared to 2018.
The greatest reduction came from biogas power generation. In 2024, Lotte Chilsung Beverage installed equipment at its Gunsan plant to generate electricity and steam using byproducts from the alcohol production process. This facility reduced greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 5,000 tons last year. Last year’s power generation totaled about 9 GWh, accounting for approximately 50% of the Gunsan plant’s annual electricity consumption.
The company is also expanding its solar power generation facilities. Starting with the Chungju Plant 2 in 2018, Lotte Chilsung Beverage now operates solar power generation facilities at five major business sites nationwide, including the Anseong and Yangsan plants and a logistics hub in the Gangneung area. Through these efforts, the company reduced greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 460 tons last year.
The company has also pursued fuel conversion. In 2024, Lotte Chilsung Beverage signed a Carbon-Neutral Green Partnership Agreement with Daejeon Metropolitan City and CNCITY Energy to replace existing liquefied natural gas (LNG) with landfill gas (LFG). This involves using methane gas captured from landfills to power boilers and produce the steam required for manufacturing processes. Last year, the reduction in this sector amounted to approximately 380 tons.
The company also utilized the transition to electric vehicles as a means of reduction. By the end of last year, Lotte Chilsung Beverage had introduced a cumulative total of approximately 630 electric vehicles. This resulted in greenhouse gas reductions of about 550 tons last year. The company was recognized for its achievement rate in meeting its eco-friendly vehicle purchase targets and received the Minister of Climate, Energy, and Environment Award at the 2025 Korea Energy Awards.
Lotte Chilsung Beverage plans to continue improving processes and upgrading facilities this year with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by more than 10,000 tons.
A representative from Lotte Chilsung Beverage stated, “As a leading comprehensive beverage company in Korea, we are dedicated to fulfilling our social responsibilities through active investment in carbon neutrality and relentless innovation.” They added, “We will continue our ESG management activities to set an example for the industry and pass on a clean environment to future generations.”
