[Edaily Reporter Shin Su-jeong] CJ Wellcare announced on the 4th that it has unveiled the results of its synbiotics research, which involves designing prebiotic formulations tailored to the characteristics of specific probiotic strains.

CJ Wellcare presented its strain-specific formula design technology at the International Human Microbiome Consortium (IHMC 2026). This technology focuses on enhancing the survival and functional activity of lactic acid bacteria, based on the fact that the prebiotics suitable for each probiotic strain differ.

The company conducted genomic analysis and cultivation experiments on Lactobacillus plantarum strains, including its proprietary patented strain CJLP133. The research revealed that each strain possesses distinct enzymatic and metabolic characteristics for breaking down and utilizing prebiotics.

In the experiments, CJLP133 showed a growth increase of up to 200 times in a specific galacto-oligosaccharide (GOS) environment compared to standard glucose conditions. However, in some prebiotic environments, growth responses varied by strain. This implies that even among lactic acid bacteria in the same Plantarum group, the optimal combination of prebiotics may differ depending on the strain’s characteristics.

Based on this research, CJ Wellcare plans to apply genome-analysis-based, strain-specific formula design technology to the development of next-generation products for its premium probiotic brand, Biocore. The company aims to enhance functionality and product competitiveness by tailoring formulations to the specific characteristics of each strain.
