"GenAI, a 'One-Stop Flow Platform' Connecting the Entire Film Production Process" [Interview]

Interview with Park Tae-jang and Lee Jae-seon, Team Leaders at CJ Podiflex Planning, Filming, and Post-Production Data Integrated into a Single Platform “Production Efficiency Improved by 25–30%”… Field Test Results Confirmed Director Kim Han-min also praised it as “an innovation that will change existing production methods” “AI Is Not a Replacement for Creators, but a Tool to Expand Creative Capabilities”

[Edaily Reporter Yoon Ki-baek] “We will connect the entire film production process with artificial intelligence (AI).”
#CJ CGV subsidiary CJ 4DPLEX is embarking on a content production revolution led by “GEN.AI,” an AI-based film production platform currently under development. The company plans to go beyond simple generative AI tools by connecting the entire film production process—from planning to shooting and post-production—into a single platform.

◇Building an AI Production Ecosystem… A Paradigm Shift in Film Production
Park Tae-jang, Team Leader of DX Solutions at CJ Podiflex, who is in charge of developing the GenAI platform and overseeing actual production sites, explained in an interview with Edaily, “CJ is a company that possesses the entire entertainment value chain, from content planning to production, distribution, theaters, and Over-the-Top (OTT) services.” He added, “The starting point for GenAI is to connect the production data scattered across each stage into a single system and improve production efficiency.”
In fact, Gen AI is fundamentally different from simple video-generating AI. It is not a standalone tool that creates images or videos, but rather a system designed to systematically accumulate and analyze production data—including budgets, schedules, and personnel management. It operates by applying AI to the entire production process—from planning and filming to post-production—to learn from and manage data. Based on this, CJ Podiflex plans to build an “AI production ecosystem” and embark on a “paradigm shift in film production.”
Lee Jae-seon, Team Leader of SX Studio, stated, “What we are building is not an AI tool, but a ‘one-stop flow platform.’ It is meaningless to streamline just one process; true production innovation is only possible when everything from pre-production to post-production is connected.”
CJ Podiflex is currently validating its GenAI platform through projects such as Director Kim Han-min’s “Kal: The Sword of Godu-mak-han,” Director Kang Yoon-sung’s “Gulf of Aden,” and Director Lee Cheol-ha’s “OK Madam 2.” Last May, the company unveiled the results of these projects at KCON in Japan and conducted platform validation tests.
The reason GenAI is garnering attention is not merely due to cost savings. It lies in its ability to centralize data generated during the production process, thereby transforming communication and decision-making structures among workers.
Team Leader Park explained, “In traditional film production, data related to screenwriting, filming, and post-production was fragmented,” adding, “With GenAI, all production information can be shared and linked within a single project.”

◇Production Efficiency Improved by 25–30%… Production Costs and Time Significantly Reduced
The results are already becoming visible. According to Team Leader Lee, the improvement in production efficiency observed in current projects is at least 25–30%. The changes are particularly significant during the pre-production phase. He explained that pre-visualization work, which used to take several months, can now be completed within a few days, leading to significant reductions in production costs and time.
Director Kang Yoon-sung’s ‘Gulf of Aden’ is cited as a prime example. The approach involves creating key action sequences using AI-based pre-visualization and then selecting only the parts that require actual filming for production. Team Leader Lee said, “Since we can determine in advance which scenes to film and which to render digitally, production efficiency has increased significantly.”
However, CJ Podiflex drew a line at the prospect that AI would completely replace film production.
Team Leader Lee noted, “While AI is advancing at an astonishing pace, it currently has limitations in achieving the level of quality required for commercial theatrical films on its own,” adding, “A hybrid approach combining AI with existing VFX technology will remain the industry standard for the foreseeable future.”

In practice, GenAI is designed not to use AI-generated output directly, but to integrate it with existing VFX pipelines to enhance the final quality. Director Kim Han-min was also reported to have praised it as “an innovation that will significantly change existing production methods” following a platform demonstration.
CJ Podiflex plans to open GenAI to external creators in the future, rather than limiting it to within the group. The vision is to enable small and medium-sized production companies and new studios—which have struggled to secure expensive equipment, render farms, and specialized personnel—to produce high-quality content using the platform.
Team Leader Park stated, “Ultimately, what matters is not the AI, but the creator’s imagination,” adding, “GenAI will be a platform that helps creators bring their ideas to life with less cost and time.”
