Unexpected Debate on Everyday Life Amid Meeting of Top Executives
[Edaily Reporter Shin Young-bin] A “samgyeopsal and soju gathering” between Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, and the heads of major Korean companies is generating buzz online. Netizens were particularly drawn to LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo trimming the fat off the pork belly and CEO Huang taking a bite of a perilla leaf wrap.
On the evening of the 5th, CEO Huang held a dinner at “Hyungnim Jeyo,” a pork belly restaurant near Hongik University Station in Mapo-gu, Seoul, with SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won, LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo, and Naver Chairman Lee Hae-jin. The gathering was dubbed the “Samso Meeting” because it featured pork belly and soju. (From left) Naver Chairman Lee Hae-jin, LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo, SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won, and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang (Photo: Joint Press Corps) Soju and beer were on the table, and it was reported that the attendees toasted with beer before mixing it with soju to drink. During the meal, CEO Huang addressed reporters, saying, “Go Korea, Go SK, Go LG, Naver,” and “Everyone loves HBM,” emphasizing the spirit of cooperation with Korean companies.
However, the scene that first went viral online after the meeting was somewhat mundane. It showed Chairman Koo, the youngest attendee, grilling pork belly with tongs. Chairman Koo drew attention by naturally taking on the so-called “junior role,” cutting meat and tending to the table.
In particular, a scene where Chairman Koo appeared to be cutting off the fatty parts of the pork belly was quickly shared online, sparking a heated debate. Some netizens reacted with comments like, “The fat is what makes pork belly tasty—why cut it off?” and “Isn’t that the most important part?” On the other hand, others argued, “Too much fat can be greasy,” “Wasn’t he just being considerate of others’ tastes?” and “It makes sense from a health perspective.”
CEO Hwang’s perilla leaf wrap also became a hot topic. After Naver Chairman Lee Hae-jin demonstrated how to make the wrap, CEO Hwang followed suit, eating a wrap filled with pork belly and vegetables. Later, when CEO Hwang was seen taking a bite of the perilla leaf wrap rather than eating it in one mouthful, online reactions included: “You’re supposed to eat the wrap in one bite,” “For a foreigner, this is actually pretty good,” and “He’s fully adapted to K-style company dinners.”
The meeting also drew attention to the potential for expanded cooperation between NVIDIA and Korean companies. CEO Hwang emphasized that he is continuing to collaborate with Korean companies in the fields of HBM, memory, AI, and robotics. He also mentioned plans to establish a research center in Seoul for AI research engineers and robotics research.
What captured the public’s attention was not grand statements, but rather the CEO’s down-to-earth demeanor at the gathering. CEO Huang took photos with guests nearby and drew interest by handing out “HBM Chips”—snacks developed through a collaboration between SK Hynix and 7-Eleven—alongside Chairman Choi. CEO Huang and the business leaders even stepped outside the restaurant to hand out donuts to reporters.
