[Edaily Reporter Shin Ha-yeon] The KOSPI is showing strength, opening more than 4% higher in early trading. This is due to the impact of the U.S. and Iran reaching a ceasefire agreement, which has boosted investor sentiment.

According to MP Doctor on the 15th, as of 9:17 a.m. today, the KOSPI is trading at 8,542.63, up 419.01 points (5.16%) from the previous trading day. The index opened at 8,526.12, up 4.95% from the previous day, and continues to trend higher.

The surge in the KOSPI even triggered an intraday buy-side sidecar (temporary suspension of program sell orders). The KOSPI sidecar is triggered when the KOSPI 200 futures price remains more than 5% above the benchmark price for at least one minute.

Last week, the three major U.S. stock indices all closed higher. On the 13th (local time), the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which tracks blue-chip stocks, closed at 51,202.26, up 353.51 points (0.70%) from the previous session.

The S&P 500 Index, a benchmark for large-cap stocks, closed at 7,431.46, up 37.16 points (0.50%) from the previous session, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index closed at 25,888.84, up 79.18 points (0.31%) from the previous session.

U.S. President Donald Trump officially announced the conclusion of peace negotiations with Iran on the 14th (local time). Through his social media platform, Truth Social, he stated, “The agreement with Iran is now complete,” adding, “I hereby fully authorize the resumption of free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and, at the same time, authorize the immediate lifting of the U.S. Navy’s naval blockade.”

The Iranian side also confirmed that the draft memorandum of understanding for the ceasefire negotiations has been finalized, and the official signing ceremony is scheduled to take place in Switzerland on the 19th. This marks the conclusion of the war, which began on February 28, after 106 days.

Han Ji-young, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities, said, “Since foreign investors turned to net buying (+2.1 trillion won) on the KOSPI last Friday for the first time in 25 trading days, foreign capital flows are expected to be the main focus in the domestic stock market,” adding "Given that macroeconomic uncertainty was the rationale behind foreign investors’ intensified profit-taking, particularly in semiconductor stocks like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, it is appropriate to anticipate the possibility of continued net buying by these investors if the market reacts neutrally or more positively to events this week, such as the June FOMC meeting and the final U.S.-Iran negotiations."

In terms of supply and demand, individual investors and institutions are currently net buyers of 327.7 billion won and 46.9 billion won, respectively, in the stock market. Foreign investors alone are net sellers by 357.5 billion won. Program trading shows a net selling position of 2.9852 trillion won, combining both arbitrage and non-arbitrage trades.

Among the top market cap stocks, #Samsung Electronics is trading at 340,500 won, up 18,000 won (5.58%) from the previous trading day. #SK Hynix is trading at 2,287,000 won, up 137,000 won (6.37%).
