SOOP announced on the 17th that the scope of its AI captioning feature—based on real-time speech-to-text (STT) and AI translation technology—is expanding. SOOP’s AI captioning service converts broadcast audio into text and provides captions in various languages.

Live streaming often takes place in environments where speech is delivered at a fast pace and there are many variables, such as on-site noise or game sounds. SOOP utilizes server-based speech recognition and AI translation technologies to help domestic and international users enjoy content without language barriers.

AI subtitles are primarily used in content where real-time information delivery is crucial, such as sports and esports broadcasts and talk shows. Viewers can check subtitles for information that is easy to miss when relying solely on audio—including game situations and commentary, as well as player names and tactical terms. By utilizing the AI translation feature, users can view subtitles in their preferred language, allowing overseas users—even those without access to local-language broadcasts—to easily understand the content.

Recently, AI subtitles have also been used to watch broadcasts without sound. This is because viewers can follow the broadcast content using subtitles alone even in environments where it’s difficult to turn on the sound, such as on public transportation, in public places, or late at night.

SOOP explained that while listening to audio used to be essential for enjoying live streams, viewers can now grasp the main points through subtitles alone, diversifying the viewing experience.

The use of AI subtitles and translation features is also on the rise in overseas travel broadcasts. As conversations between streamers and locals are translated and provided in real time, viewers can more easily understand local situations and culture. For example, in a broadcast by streamer Han Duer featuring travel content from China, real-time subtitles for conversations with locals garnered positive feedback from viewers.

AI subtitles are also playing a role in breaking down language barriers in streams where streamers interact with global viewers. With real-time translation subtitles enabling international viewers to understand the content, Korean streamers are expanding their reach to overseas fans beyond the constraints of national borders and language. This feature is also being utilized to enhance content accessibility in streams by esports players and streamers with global fan bases.

SOOP plans to introduce a chat translation feature in the second half of this year. By providing real-time translations of not only the broadcast audio but also the chat, the company aims to support freer communication between global viewers and streamers.

A SOOP representative stated, “We will continue to expand the communication environment between global viewers and streamers and create a live streaming environment where content can be enjoyed without language barriers.”
