[Edaily Reporter Shin Ha-yeon ] Energy infrastructure company BHI Co., LTD.(083650)(BHI) has become the first in Korea to successfully localize a 2MW-class alkaline water electrolysis stack and is now expanding its green hydrogen business.
BHI Co., LTD. announced on the 29th that it had successfully completed the project titled “Development of 2MW-Class High-Efficiency Alkaline Electrolysis Single-Stack Technology.” The 2MW-class large-area, high-efficiency alkaline electrolysis stack developed by BHI Co., LTD. (Photo: BHI Co., LTD.) An electrolysis stack is the core component of an electrolysis system that produces hydrogen and oxygen by electrolysis of water. It consists of multiple cells stacked on top of each other to increase the surface area for electrochemical reactions and is considered a key component that determines the system’s performance, efficiency, safety, and capacity.
While kW-class alkaline water electrolysis technology has been developed in Korea, commercialization at the MW level has been limited due to the high technical difficulty involved. BHI Co., LTD. explained that by successfully developing a 2MW-class single stack, it has secured MW-class core technology for the first time in the country.
The company stated that the developed stack underwent verification by an external specialized institution and met all development targets across seven key performance indicators.
In particular, the company explained that it achieved top-tier domestic performance in terms of power consumption relative to capacity, hydrogen production volume, and effective electrode area, while its stack efficiency, current density, system price, and localization rate were evaluated as globally competitive.
Long-term operational stability was also confirmed. BHI Co., LTD. stated that after conducting 800 hours of continuous operation in a high-pressure environment, the system maintained an efficiency of over 80% even under maximum load conditions, verifying its stable performance.
With this development, BHI Co., LTD. has independently secured the core technologies required for the entire 2MW-class alkaline water electrolysis system. Previously, at the end of last year, the company also completed a technology demonstration of a 2MW-class alkaline water electrolysis plant.
The company expects this technology to be utilized in various green hydrogen sectors, including hydrogen co-firing in power generation, distributed fuel cells, hydrogen production linked to renewable energy (P2G), decarbonization of industrial processes, and eco-friendly hydrogen refueling infrastructure.
Shin Hyun-cheol, Vice President of BHI Co., LTD., stated, “We have been continuously developing technologies in the fuel cell and green hydrogen sectors since 2019, and our achievements are becoming visible through the Ansan project and the development of this 2MW-class electrolysis stack.” He added, “We will actively target domestic and international green hydrogen markets through continuous technological development and commercialization.”
