M eighty-three Co.,Ltd. announced on the 1st that it has launched the AI Media Lab to enhance its AI R&D capabilities. The AI Media Lab will serve as the group’s central hub, integrating the AI R&D projects accumulated to date to simultaneously conduct research on AI for content production and industrial AI.
Building on the advanced visual effects (VFX) capabilities and live-action-based 3D asset production technologies accumulated through the production of movies, dramas, and over-the-top (OTT) content, M eighty-three Co.,Ltd. has been advancing AI-based content production technologies and visual AI research.
Its subsidiary, D-Blat, has built up expertise centered on AI video generation and deepfake creation and synthesis technologies. Recently, the company has expanded its business scope beyond the traditional area of streamlining VFX production to the visual AI-based detection and verification market, which involves determining the authenticity of AI-generated videos and detecting deepfakes.
AI Media Lab conducts research and development on a wide range of AI-based visual technologies, including synthetic data for physical AI training, digital humans, computer vision, and deepfake generation and detection technologies. The company plans to expand its research scope beyond simply optimizing content production efficiency to include the field of industrial AI.
The global AI market is rapidly shifting beyond generative AI to focus on physical AI, which perceives and acts in real-world environments. As demand grows for AI training data and digital environments in areas such as humanoid robots, autonomous driving, and smart factories, the importance of visual AI technologies that accurately replicate reality is increasing. Visual AI technologies, such as deepfake generation and detection, are also seeing their scope of application expand into various fields, including video authenticity verification and data generation.
An M eighty-three Co.,Ltd. official stated, “Based on our visual AI capabilities—which combine VFX and AI technologies—we will expand our business scope beyond content production into areas such as robotics, smart factories, and defense to build a group-wide AI ecosystem.”
