Yeon Jeong: "I Put My Dreams and Sweet Ambitions into My Music… I Wanted to Cheer On Newly Employed Young Adults" [Interview]
Singer-songwriter Yeon Jeong Releases New Album 'Go'
Features 5 tracks, including “My Dream” and “Pretty Ambition”
"I hope to be a source of strength for those embarking on a new beginning"
[Edaily Starin KIM HYUNSIK Reporter] “I looked back on the songs I’ve released so far, filled in the gaps, and brought back the elements that worked well. I prepared this album with the mindset of making a fresh start, and I hope it will be of some help to those who are about to embark on a new chapter in their lives.” (Photo courtesy of Groi Entertainment)Singer-songwriter Yeon Jeong (26) made these remarks during a recent interview with E-Daily at her agency, Groi Entertainment, located in Yeonnam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, while introducing her new mini-album *GO*. “GO” is an album consisting of five rock-based tracks, including the title track “My Dream, Pretty Ambition,” as well as “My Sisyphus,” “Old Shoes,” “That’s Fine,” and “Goodnight My Dear.” Yeon Jeong personally participated in the lyrics, composition, and arrangement of all tracks. Yeonjeong said, “Looking back on my past activities, I found myself thinking, ‘Why didn’t I create an album with artistic merit sooner?’” She added, “For this album, I set a theme from the very beginning and worked while considering the connections between the tracks to enhance its artistic quality.” The keyword that runs through the album is “beginning.” Yeon-jeong explained, “I expressed various kinds of beginnings through my music—stories of starting something while falling behind, beginning anew when everyone else seems to be moving forward but you’re the only one standing still, and stories of making a fresh start while vowing to accept everything, even if it leads to unfavorable outcomes in the future.” (Photo courtesy of Groi Entertainment)The title track, “My Dream, Pretty Ambition,” is a song that explores the theme of honest desire for one’s dreams. Yeon-jeong introduced it as “a song in the style that comes to mind when you think of ‘indie-inspired rock.’” She added with a laugh, “The CEO of my agency chose it as the title track because he said it had a similar vibe to ‘Hide and Seek,’ which received the best response among my previously released songs.” Regarding the message conveyed in the song, she explained, “Don’t you sometimes feel like someone’s advice comes across as nagging? The song conveys the message of declaring, ‘I appreciate the advice, but I have my own path and dreams.’” Yeon-jeong added, “I hope that young adults my age, just starting out in life, won’t be swayed by others’ words as they pursue their dreams. I hope they don’t lose hope and keep moving forward until the very end.” Yeon-jeong also spoke about the “dreams” and “ambitions” she holds dear. She confidently stated, “My long-term goal and dream is to become a musician who holds solo concerts at the K-Sport Dome and Gocheok Sky Dome, and my ‘ambition’—which stems from my hope that more people will listen to my music—is to enter the music chart rankings.” In addition, Yeon-jeong cited the EBS music program “Space Gonggam” as a show she definitely wants to appear on someday, laughing as she said, “I heard the news about the program’s revival not long ago and even left a comment on their official social media channels asking to appear on the show.” (Photo courtesy of Groi Entertainment)Yeonjeong is a singer-songwriter who handles not only songwriting, composition, and arrangement but also plays the electric guitar. Her potential was recognized when she received an Encouragement Award at the 33rd Yoo Jae-ha Music Competition in 2022, and she has since continued her career under Groi Entertainment, led by CEO Koo Ja-young, who has nurtured artists such as the band Bulldog Mansion, Billionacost, O’wan, and Yoo Geun-ho. Yeonjeong has performed at various music festivals, including the “Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival,” “Grand Mint Festival,” and “Beautiful Mint Life,” and at the end of last year, she signaled another step in her growth by holding her largest solo concert to date at Nodul Island Live House. On the 22nd of next month, she will hold a solo concert at CKL Stage to reunite with her fanbase, “Yeongeun.” Yeonjeong said, “The fan club name ‘Yeongeun’ means ‘Yeonjeong’s roots,’” adding, “The support and love from my fans are a major driving force behind my activities.” Regarding the current trend of female singer-songwriters like Han Ro-ro, Yoon Machi, and Gong Won breathing new life into the indie music scene, she smiled and said, “I’m benefiting from that too. I’m truly grateful that more and more people are discovering my music through algorithms.” Yeonjeong continued, “I’ll work even harder to become a musician loved by more people,” and expressed her determination, saying, “I’ll do my best to make this year the first year of ‘Yeonjeong 2.0.’ I’ll also work hard on creating short-form content, just like idol singers do, to expand my fan base.” “With this album, what I want to hear most is, ‘Yeonjeong has really grown.’ I hope this album will give birth to a signature song for Yeonjeong that receives even more love than ‘I’ll Love the Evening’ and ‘Hide and Seek.’”
