LG Corp. announced on the 8th that, in observance of “Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day” on the 4th, it provided support to families with children with developmental disabilities facing crises through its in-house donation program, “Love for 1,000 Won.”
This support was organized to help vulnerable families struggling with the burden of comprehensive medical expenses due to their children suffering from both severe disabilities and rare diseases. LGU+ collaborated with the Milal Welfare Foundation to select beneficiaries who had fallen through the cracks of the support system and delivered approximately 5 million won in donations collected by employees.
“Love of 1,000 Won” is LGU+’s flagship employee-participation social contribution program, in which employees voluntarily donate at least 1,000 won deducted from their monthly salaries. Although the donations are small, consistent participation has allowed the program to support marginalized communities, including children with disabilities and Korean War veterans, over the years. To date, cumulative donations have reached approximately 320 million won.
The recipient of this support is a 10-year-old child suffering from both a severe brain disorder and a developmental disability. The child experiences unstable breathing, leading to frequent medical emergencies, and exhibits severe muscle rigidity even with the slightest movement, making continuous rehabilitation therapy essential. The family was facing increasing financial hardship due to long-term medical expenses and the burden of caregiving when they received this support.
Taking this sponsorship as an opportunity, LG Corp. plans to continuously review its practical support system to ensure that families in crisis who fall through the cracks of the healthcare system can continue rehabilitation treatment without interruption.
Kim Jeong-eun, a senior member of the AI Service Planning Team at LG Corp., said, “I hope the small gestures of kindness collected through the collective efforts of our employees will provide tangible support to families with disabled children and their young children who are in the gaps in the welfare system,” adding, “We will continue to carry out activities that bring warmth to neighbors in need.”
Ko Seong-won, Head of the Fundraising Division at the Milal Welfare Foundation, remarked, “The ‘1,000 Won of Love’ campaign by LG Corp. employees will be a great oasis for families with children with disabilities suffering in welfare blind spots,” and added, “The Foundation will also manage this project transparently and diligently to ensure the donations are used entirely for the children’s treatment and recovery.”
