Traditional open-field farming can suffer a blow to sales due to reduced yields when extreme weather events, such as heat waves or torrential rains, occur. In contrast, WooDeumGee Farm Co., Ltd explained that its smart farm facilities maintain a consistent internal greenhouse environment, enabling stable production regardless of external weather conditions.
The company uses an air-source heat pump heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system to maintain the internal greenhouse temperature at a level suitable for tomato growth. It stated that this allows for consistent management of both yield and quality.
WooDeumGee Farm Co., Ltd operates under a business structure where fixed costs—such as nutrient solution expenses, facility depreciation, and labor costs—account for a high proportion of total expenses. Consequently, the company explained that if market prices for tomatoes rise due to weather impacts, higher selling prices can translate directly into operating profit without incurring additional costs.
The company continues to supply high-quality tomatoes based on stable contract farming and a year-round shipping system, and expects that as price volatility in agricultural products increases due to climate change, the competitive edge of its smart farm-based production will become increasingly prominent.
