Three Strategies to Boost Corporate Value… “Technology Exports, Pet Products, and IPOs” [In-Depth Look at Glasseum ③]

[E-Daily Reporter NA EUN-KYUNG ] Glasseum is currently known as a company developing treatments for Parkinson’s disease. However, a closer look at the company’s business structure reveals that its strategy is not to stake everything on Parkinson’s disease alone. While Parkinson’s disease represents a key new drug pipeline for enhancing corporate value, it will take a long time to reach commercialization. Accordingly, Glasseum is securing growth drivers through pet obesity treatments, technology exports, and an initial public offering (IPO).

Phase 2b Parkinson’s Trial: The First Hurdle That Will Determine Corporate Value
Glaseum’s Phase 2b clinical trial for butiglabridin for Parkinson’s disease is considered its key priority. Glaseum submitted an Investigational New Drug (IND) application to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety this year and plans to begin full-scale patient recruitment following approval. Having confirmed the potential for motor function improvement in the Phase 2a trial, the company aims to replicate these results on a larger scale in the Phase 2b trial.

In the biotech industry, Phase 2b clinical trials for Parkinson’s disease are generally viewed as a watershed moment that determines whether a technology will be exported. In fact, global pharmaceutical companies often begin serious consideration of acquiring a technology only after securing Phase 2b data, rather than based on early-stage clinical results.

Yoo Sang-gu, CEO of Glaseum, said, “If favorable terms are offered, we will actively consider a technology export.” Ultimately, the results of the Phase 2b clinical trial for butiglabridin are considered the most critical event in determining Glaseum’s corporate value.

Glaseum is prioritizing technology licensing over independent commercialization. This is because the Parkinson’s disease treatment market involves global clinical trial costs amounting to hundreds of billions of won. For an unlisted biotech venture, the practical burden of pursuing late-stage clinical trials and commercialization on its own is too great.

The company has also made securing a global partner one of its key objectives. In fact, Glaseum recently participated in global partnering events, such as BioUSA in the U.S., and held meetings with numerous global pharmaceutical companies.

Technology licensing is not unfamiliar territory for CEO Yoo. Before founding Glaseum, he ran Irum Biotechnology, where he licensed candidate compounds in the monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) inhibitor class to the South Korean company Pharm Hannong and the global pharmaceutical company Janssen.

Given that there are currently no approved disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) for Parkinson’s disease, Glaseum expects that if meaningful clinical data is secured, there will be ample potential for technology export.
Another Attempt at an IPO… The Pet Business as a Bridge
Glaseum is also resuming its efforts to list via the technology exception route. The company had previously pursued an IPO but shelved the plan due to deteriorating market conditions. Since then, having secured clinical data for Parkinson’s disease, it has resumed preparations for the listing.

However, it is difficult to generate short-term results based on Parkinson’s disease alone. For this reason, the company is focusing on obesity treatment for pets. Pet pharmaceuticals have a shorter development period and relatively simpler approval procedures compared to human pharmaceuticals. After confirming weight loss effects in a study targeting obese dogs, Glaseum is currently preparing for a confirmatory clinical trial to obtain marketing authorization.

The company expects its pet obesity business to help secure future R&D funding. While Parkinson’s disease serves as a long-term growth driver, the pet obesity business is seen as a revenue source that can be commercialized more quickly.

Ultimately, Glaseum’s future enterprise value hinges on three key events: the success of its Phase 2b clinical trial for Parkinson’s disease, the successful global technology export of its canine obesity treatment, and a renewed attempt at an initial public offering (IPO).

CEO Yoo stated, “Glaseum plans to demonstrate its value across various disease areas based on its autophagy platform.”

Glaseum’s cumulative investment raised amounts to 47.2 billion won. The company plans to raise an additional 20 billion won through a pre-IPO funding round in the fourth quarter of this year.
