Analysis: "Recent Series of Sharp Drops in the Domestic Stock Market Is Largely Excessive"
[Edaily Reporter Kwon Oh Seok ] The KOSPI, which had been falling sharply in quick succession and was threatened with a drop below the 7,000 mark, is rebounding. The KOSPI and KOSDAQ indices are displayed in Hana Bank’s trading room on the 9th. (Photo = Yonhap News) According to MP Doctor on the 9th, the KOSPI opened at 7,486.64, up 239.85 points (3.31%) from the previous trading day, and as of 9:08 a.m., it was trading at 7,491.98, up 245.19 points (3.38%). So far today, retail investors are the only group showing net selling on the KOSPI market, with 199.3 billion won in net sales, while foreign and institutional investors are net buyers of 54.7 billion won and 150.0 billion won, respectively. By trading type, combined arbitrage and non-arbitrage trades show a net buying position of 119.8 billion won. Earlier, U.S. stock markets in New York closed mixed as military tensions between the U.S. and Iran escalated again. On the 8th (local time), U.S. Central Command posted a statement on “X,” saying, “Pursuant to the Commander-in-Chief’s orders, U.S. Central Command forces have launched airstrikes to further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.” This airstrike took place immediately after three cargo ships were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz and Iran announced that it had struck U.S. military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait. As a result, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 52,348.39 on the New York Stock Exchange that same day, down 1.09% from the previous trading day. The S&P 500 index fell 0.28% to 7,482.71, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index closed up 0.20% at 25,870.65. Although selling pressure dominated the market overall—with about 400 S&P 500 components falling—the Nasdaq managed to maintain its upward trend as semiconductor stocks rebounded. Amid perceptions that the KOSPI’s recent plunge—which included three consecutive trading days of sharp declines and the activation of the “sell-side sidecar” (a temporary suspension of program sell orders) for two consecutive days—was excessive, the securities industry expects that news of a rebound in U.S. semiconductor stocks and a 4.1% rise in KOSPI 200 overnight futures will create an incentive for bargain hunting. Han Ji-young, an analyst at KIWOOM Securities, said, “It is not easy to restore investor sentiment, which has cooled so rapidly, to its previous state in just a day or two. “However, paradoxically, it is worth noting that factors suggesting the market may have entered the bottom range are emerging as a result of this sharp decline,” she noted, adding, “A prime example is that the KOSPI’s forward P/E ratio fell to 6.25 times yesterday, falling below the low of 6.27 times recorded during the 2008 financial crisis.” He continued, “Since the recent series of sharp declines occurred without any visible deterioration in fundamentals and were largely excessive, we judge that the expected probability of further declines is low,” and advised, “At the current level, where the KOSPI has fallen to the low 7,000s, it is appropriate to prioritize gradual buying focused on previously leading sectors that have been oversold, such as semiconductors, MLCCs, power equipment, and securities.” So far today, large-cap stocks are the only ones rising in the KOSPI market, up 3.83%, while mid-cap stocks are down 0.45% and small-cap stocks are down 0.29%. By sector, electrical and electronics are up 5.90%, manufacturing is up 4.44%, and medical and precision instruments are up 2.58%, while entertainment and culture are down 3.67%, insurance is down 3.19%, and textiles and apparel are down 2.44%. Most of the top market-cap stocks are on the rise. SamsungElectronics(005930)is trading at 287,000 won, up 10,000 won (3.60%) from the previous trading day, while SK hynix(000660)is trading at 2,197,000 won, up 121,000 won (5.83%) over the same period. However, HyundaiMotor(005380)is trading at 460,000 won, down 0.54% (2,500 won). Meanwhile, the KOSDAQ index opened at 792.99, up 7.99 points (1.02%) from the previous trading day, and is currently trading at 793.17, up 8.17 points (1.04%) at the same time. In the KOSDAQ market, retail investors and foreign investors are net sellers of 20.2 billion won and 1.0 billion won, respectively, while institutional investors are net buyers of 20.8 billion won. By trading type, combined arbitrage and non-arbitrage trades show a net selling position of 1.5 billion won.
