Choi Tae-won: "We Will Review Further Requests for a SK hynix Stock Split"
Press Conference to Commemorate NASDAQ Listing
"I haven't received a proposal for the CFO position yet"
Mentioned the possibility of a review, not a decision
[New York = E-Daily Kim Sang-yoon Correspondent] SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won hinted at the possibility of a stock split for SK hynix(000660), stating, “We will consider it if we receive more requests.” However, he drew a line, noting that he had not yet been briefed on any related proposals and that no decision had been made. (Photo=AFP) At a press conference held in New York, U.S., on the 10th (local time) to commemorate SK hynix’s listing on the Nasdaq, Chairman Choi responded to a question asking, “Are you considering a stock split to make SK hynix shares—which are listed on the KOSPI—more accessible to individual investors given their high price?” by saying, “If we receive more requests, we will naturally proceed with a stock split.” He continued, “I have not yet received a proposal to that effect from the Chief Financial Officer (CFO),” adding, “I would consider it if I were briefed on it, but since I haven’t even seen that agenda item yet, I don’t have the information necessary to answer.” He added, “It means we might consider it,” noting, “After all, don’t we have to consider everything in life?” In the market, there have been persistent calls for a stock split as SK hynix’s stock price has continued to rise sharply recently, driven by expectations of growth in the artificial intelligence (AI) memory market and the company’s competitiveness in high-bandwidth memory (HBM). The argument is that as the stock price rises, the investment burden on retail investors increases, making it necessary to consider a stock split to enhance liquidity and broaden the investor base. However, a stock split is a matter that requires a board resolution and approval at a shareholders’ meeting. Chairman Choi also stated at this briefing, “I have not yet received a report on the relevant agenda item,” indicating that at this stage, he was merely mentioning the possibility of consideration. Meanwhile, the press conference was held to mark SK hynix’s listing on the U.S. Nasdaq. Regarding the construction of a memory semiconductor plant in the U.S., Chairman Choi said, “If the conditions are right, there is no reason not to consider it, whether in the U.S. or another country.” On competition with Chinese semiconductor companies, he emphasized, “By the time you feel threatened, it’s already too late,” stressing that in the AI era, technological innovation and investment must proceed at a much faster pace than in the past.
