[E-Daily Reporter Kwon Oh Seok ] SKTelecom(017670)’s stock price is surging in early trading. It appears that buying interest is surging following news that the company is moving full steam ahead with the construction of an artificial intelligence (AI) data center (AI DC), one of the government’s “Three Mega Projects for Korea’s Great Leap Forward.”

According to MP Doctor on the 16th, SKTelecom’s stock was trading at 92,700 won as of 9:12 a.m., up 9.06% from the previous trading day.
The company announced the previous day that it had established an “AI DC Integrated Task Force” reporting directly to CEO Jeong Jae-heon and appointed Jeong Seok-geun, head of the AI CIC, as the task force leader.
The task force consists of business development and engineering/construction teams. It plans to manage the entire project process, from selecting sites for AI data centers to design, construction, and customer acquisition. This move appears aimed at accelerating the project by unifying the decision-making process and execution framework for this large-scale AI infrastructure initiative.
SKTelecom is overseeing SK Group’s 15 GW (gigawatt) AI data center construction project, which involves a total investment of 1,000 trillion won. Starting with the AI data center currently under construction in Ulsan, the company plans to expand the project nationwide to regions such as Yeongnam and Honam. The government is promoting AI data centers as one of the “Three Mega Projects for Korea’s Great Leap Forward” to expand AI computing infrastructure, and SK had previously announced its private investment plan.
