Bong Joon-ho: "Where else can you see a movie like this?"… A Flurry of Praise for 'Hope'
Director Na Hong-jin Receives Praise for Direction, Action, and Casting at Post-Screening Q&A
"A Spectacular Cinema Experience Bursting with Passion and Madness"
[Edaily Starin YUN GI BACK Reporter] Director Bong Joon-ho continued to praise the film “Hope.” During a post-screening Q&A session with Director Na Hong-jin on the film’s opening day, he repeatedly lauded the film’s direction, action sequences, and the actors’ performances, highly commending the film’s overall quality. “Hope” held a GV at Megabox COEX on the 15th, attended by directors Na Hong-jin and Bong Joon-ho. Amid high interest—with all seats selling out as soon as tickets went on sale—the two directors engaged in an in-depth discussion about the film’s production process and their directorial intentions. Director Bong Joon-ho described the film as “a work that delivers the delightful shock of making you wonder, ‘What on earth did I just watch?’” He added, “Where else could you see a film like this? It’s a film bursting with audacity and madness—a true spectacle of cinema.” He continued, “As a fellow filmmaker, I felt a sense of gratitude.” He particularly highlighted the film’s rhythm and tension in the first half. “The breathless pacing, the thrilling music, and cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo’s camerawork all came together to create overwhelming suspense,” he said, noting, “It was impressive how the narrative was meticulously built up even amid the breakneck action.” Praise for the actors’ performances also followed. Director Bong remarked, “It was the actors’ intensity and performances that made the intense action convincing right to the very end,” adding, “For a director, working with great actors is the greatest fortune—in that sense, this is an enviable film.” In response, Director Na Hong-jin personally explained his creative intent behind the action and creature design. He said, “I wanted to make the CG-rendered creatures and the texture of classic, handcrafted action coexist within a single frame,” adding, “I focused on combining the sense of physical action felt in films of the past with modern visual effects.” “Hope” is leading the summer box office, having recorded the highest opening-day attendance (330,000 viewers) this year. With Director Bong Joon-ho’s praise added to the mix, interest in the film is expected to rise even further.
