Long-Term Success Potential of K-Content IPs Proven Once Again
[Edaily Starin YUN GI BACK Reporter] The movie “Train to Busan” is set to take the global box office by storm once again to mark the 10th anniversary of its release. Going beyond a simple re-release, with a 4K remaster and large-scale screenings on the horizon, it demonstrates the enduring strength of K-content intellectual property (IP) that remains competitive in the global market even as time passes. That same year, it was invited to the Midnight Screenings section at the Cannes International Film Festival and sparked a global phenomenon after receiving rave reviews from international masters such as directors Guillermo del Toro and Edgar Wright, as well as novelist Stephen King. This global re-release, commemorating the film’s 10th anniversary, will feature a 4K remastered version. With enhanced picture and sound quality that maximize the film’s suspense, it is set to deliver a fresh cinematic experience for both new audiences and existing fans. The re-release has been confirmed to begin in the Philippines (August 5), followed by North America (August 14), Japan (August 21), and Italy (September 2). Release dates are also being coordinated for Spain, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, and Mexico. Unlike the limited release in 2016, this time the scale has been significantly expanded into a wide release, screening on more than 500 screens. With a screening scale more than 10 times larger than before, North American audiences will have the opportunity to experience *Train to Busan* in theaters. A new poster has also been unveiled to mark the re-release. Artist Oliver Barrett, who has collaborated with A24, Netflix, and Disney, was commissioned to design the special poster, and reactions from international fans include comments such as, “We can finally see it in theaters,” and “We’ve been waiting for the day to experience it on the big screen.” This re-release is seen as an example of the long-term value of content IP, demonstrating that a hit film does not simply rest on past success but can secure new markets and audiences through remastering and re-releases. Lee Jeong-ha, CEO of Content Panda, said, “It is especially meaningful to be having a full-scale wide release 10 years after the 2016 limited release in North America,” adding, “As this is the film that introduced the K-zombie genre to the world, we look forward to once again offering a fresh cinematic experience to global audiences.”
