Director Christopher Nolan recently revealed a sober perspective on AI technology in an interview with the French new media channel “Hugo Decrypt,” which has 1.99 million subscribers.
When asked about the use of AI, Nolan replied, “I think of it as the ‘Trojan Horse’—one where everyone knows the Greek army is inside.”
He elaborated, “It’s made of glass, so anyone can see what’s going on inside,” adding, “That in itself means there’s already a problem.”
He remarked, “I’ve never seen a technology that’s advancing this rapidly yet being so thoroughly rejected by the public, especially the younger generation,” adding, “The level of resistance among the younger generation is particularly immense.”
Director Nolan mentioned the reaction of young people who are wary of certain AI-generated content, referring to it as “AI slop” (low-quality content). He went on to explain, “I think this skepticism is a healthy phenomenon.”
He pointed out, “Technology always brings us tremendous gifts, but we must always view it with a skeptical eye. We must also question the hidden motives of those providing the technology.”
He added, “It is when we maintain a sense of skepticism that we can get the best results from new technology,” explaining, “It is quite encouraging to see the younger generation distrusting and questioning AI.”
Director Nolan is known for prioritizing film photography and on-set direction over CGI and digital technology, and for sticking to “analog methods.”
Opinions on AI are also divided in Hollywood. In 2023, the Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) even went on strike over AI-related issues. The Directors Guild of America (DGA), of which Nolan is the president, also added protective clauses regarding AI to the agreement it signed with Hollywood studios last month.
Meanwhile, Nolan’s new film, *The Odyssey*, topped the North American box office on the 17th, its local release date, grossing $51 million (approximately 76 billion won).
*The Odyssey* follows the journey of Odysseus (played by Matt Damon), the hero who led the 10-year Trojan War to victory, as he returns to his wife Penelope (played by Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (played by Tom Holland). Ahead of its release, the first and second screenings on opening day at the CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall IMAX theater sold out all seats—excluding those reserved for people with disabilities—demonstrating high anticipation for the film.
The film opens in South Korea on the 5th of next month. Director Nolan also announced that he would be visiting South Korea for the first time to celebrate the release of *The Odyssey*.
