The Netflix film “Possible Love” has been officially invited to the Special Presentations section of the 51st Toronto International Film Festival, which will be held from September 10 to 20. “Possible Love” will reach audiences worldwide through its North American premiere.
The Toronto International Film Festival is North America’s largest film festival, featuring a diverse selection of films that balance popular appeal and artistic merit. It is considered one of the world’s four major film festivals, alongside the Venice International Film Festival, the Cannes International Film Festival, and the Berlin International Film Festival.
The Special Presentations section, to which *Possible Love* has been invited, showcases new works by globally acclaimed actors and directors, highlighting films that balance popular appeal with artistic merit. Notable past invitees include *Parasite*, *Decision to Leave*, *The Age of Shadows*, and *The Handmaiden*. At last year’s 50th Toronto International Film Festival, the Netflix film *Good News* was invited to the Special Presentations section and received an enthusiastic response.
*Possible Love* tells the story of two couples—a laid-off worker and his wife, and a documentary director and her husband—who meet to produce a documentary and come face to face with each other’s different lives and hidden desires. This is the latest film from master director Lee Chang-dong—who has won awards and received acclaim at major international film festivals for *Green Fish*, *Peppermint Candy*, *Oasis*, *Secret Sunshine*, *Poetry*, and *Burning*—marking his return to the big screen after an eight-year hiatus. The film is also generating high anticipation thanks to its star-studded cast, including Jeon Do-yeon, Seol Kyung-gu, Jo In-sung, and Jo Yeo-jeong.
Cameron Bailey, Executive Director of the Toronto International Film Festival, described Director Lee Chang-dong as “an artist who possesses both overwhelming power and remarkable subtlety.” He added, “It has been a great honor to welcome him to Toronto on numerous occasions, both as a filmmaker and as a jury member.”
He went on to praise *Possible Love*, calling it “a powerful work that deeply explores marital relationships, class, and cinema itself,” and added, “This film once again solidifies his reputation as one of the greatest filmmakers of our time.”
Meanwhile, the first-look stills released alongside the announcement captivate viewers by offering a glimpse into the subtle dynamics between “Mi-ok” (Jeon Do-yeon), “Ho-seok” (Seol Kyung-gu), “Sang-woo” (Jo In-sung), and “Ye-ji” (Jo Yeo-jeong). Although they stand side by side on the beach, they appear to be lost in their own thoughts, sparking curiosity about why they ended up there together and what might have transpired between them.
“Possible Love” features a screenplay co-written by Oh Jeong-mi—who co-wrote “Burning”—alongside director Lee Chang-dong, and is produced by Fine House Film Co., Ltd., the production company behind “Burning.”
