While this is seen as a positive factor for domestic robotics stocks in the medium to long term, analysts suggest that in the short term, stock performance will vary depending on the speed of commercialization and whether companies can integrate into the supply chains of large conglomerates. Kim Hye-bin, an analyst at IBK Investment & Securities, stated in a report on the 22nd, “The key significance of SamsungElectronics’ establishment of the RX Business Promotion Office lies in the fact that it has consolidated previously dispersed robotics capabilities, thereby reaffirming SamsungElectronics’ commitment to the business to the market and raising expectations regarding the speed of decision-making.” (Chart: IBK Investment & Securities)
SamsungElectronics recently established the RX (Robotics eXperience) Business Promotion Office, reporting directly to CEO Roh Tae-moon, and has decided to fully pursue robotics as a future growth business. This marks a further elevation of the unit’s status—from a task force (TF) for robotics commercialization formed in 2021, through the Robotics Business Team and the Future Robotics Promotion Group—to an organization reporting directly to the CEO. The company has strengthened not only its organizational structure but also its workforce and research infrastructure. It recruited Executive Vice President Lee Dong-geon—who previously oversaw robotics strategy at HyundaiMotor Group, including the operation of Boston Dynamics—as head of the Robotics Strategy Team, entrusting him with developing the mid- to long-term business roadmap. Academic experts have also joined the team, including Professor Kim Hyun-jin of Seoul National University, an expert in autonomous robot control, and Professor Kim Eui-gyeom of Ajou University, an expert in robotic hand and object manipulation. SamsungElectronics plans to consolidate its robotics personnel at the Seoul R&D Campus in Umyeon-dong and establish a “data factory” at its Gumi facility to generate data for robot training. The company also plans to establish global research hubs in the U.S., China, and Japan to leverage local technologies and ecosystems. The company intends to expand its collaboration with its subsidiary, Rainbow Robotics(277810), while also pursuing additional mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and investments in robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) companies. Consequently, market attention is expected to shift toward SamsungElectronics’ future investment targets and its ability to secure core technologies. Recently, domestic robotics stocks have undergone a sharp correction. According to IBK Investment & Securities, the combined market capitalization of major domestic robotics companies surged from approximately 16 trillion won in August of last year to 49 trillion won in early June of this year, but had fallen to 23 trillion won as of the 20th of this month. Stock prices of major companies have fallen by an average of 52.3% compared to six months ago and by an average of 33.6% compared to one month ago. Analysts attribute the rebound in robotics stocks on the 21st to a combination of expectations for a large-scale investment by SamsungElectronics and a technical rebound following an extended short-term decline. However, since Samsung’s organizational restructuring alone will not immediately lead to improved earnings for robotics companies, observers note that the short-term direction of stock prices will depend on concrete business results. Competition among major companies for the mass production of humanoid robots is expected to intensify in the second half of the year and beyond. Mass-production prototypes of HyundaiMotor Group’s Boston Dynamics “Atlas,” LGELECTRONICS’ “Cloid,” and Tesla’s “Optimus 3” are expected to be unveiled sequentially. Participation in the robot actuator market by major Korean conglomerates—including HyundaiMobis(012330), LGELECTRONICS(066570), and LS Group—is also expanding. Researcher Kim stated, “The drivers for mass-producing humanoid robots and the respective supply chains will take shape starting in the third quarter,” adding, “Amid a general uptrend in the robotics sector, it is highly likely that we will see a differentiation where investor interest narrows to core component stocks integrated into the value chains of major conglomerates.”
