[Edaily Reporter YUN GI BACK ] Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has unveiled plans to produce a feature-length film titled “Odyssey” using generative artificial intelligence (AI). He has recently been publicly critical of the casting for director Christopher Nolan’s film “Odyssey.”

On the 22nd (local time), Musk posted on his X (formerly Twitter) a message stating, “Within this year, I will use Grok Imagine to create a feature-length film version of ‘The Odyssey’ that is historically accurate and faithful to Homer’s original text.” Along with this, he reposted a roughly 3-minute-long “Odyssey” video created by a user using AI, highlighting the potential of generative AI.
The video depicts the adventures Odysseus experiences on his journey home following the Trojan War, rendered using AI. By sharing this, Musk is believed to have conveyed the message that AI has the potential to transform the very nature of filmmaking.
This remark is interpreted as a jab at director Christopher Nolan’s *Odyssey*, which is currently in theaters. Musk has consistently criticized the film, arguing that it “does not align with the original work,” citing the casting of Black actress Lupita Nyong’o as Helen and the inclusion of transgender actor Elliot Page. He has shared a series of related posts, revealing his negative stance toward diversity-focused casting.
Meanwhile, the U.S. film industry has been voicing counterarguments to Musk’s claims. Scott Derrickson, director of the film “Doctor Strange,” strongly criticized Musk on his social media, stating, “Musk clearly knows nothing about movies and hasn’t read a book since his twenties,” adding, “His opinions on art are worthless.”
Director Christopher Nolan’s *Odyssey* is based on Homer’s epic poem and stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and Lupita Nyong’o. It grossed $124.5 million (approximately 182.6 billion won) in North America and $264.1 million (approximately 387.5 billion won) worldwide during its opening weekend, setting the highest opening record ever for a Christopher Nolan film. It is set to open in South Korea on the 5th of next month.
