At 11:23 a.m. today, the 21st KOSPI sell-side “sidecar” (suspension of sell orders in program trading) of the year was triggered. The suspension of sell orders from program trading lasted for five minutes after the KOSPI 200 near-month futures contract remained 5.04% below the reference price for more than one minute. At that time, net selling via program trading totaled 1.5481 trillion won.

By investor type, foreign investors and institutions are leading the index decline with net sales of 2.7189 trillion won and 1.4969 trillion won, respectively. Retail investors are the only group showing net purchases, totaling 4.1783 trillion won, but this appears insufficient to stem the index’s decline. Program trading, combining arbitrage and non-arbitrage trades, is recording net sales totaling 3.5591 trillion won.

By sector, the electrical and electronics sector is down by around 7%. Most sectors—including manufacturing, securities, medical and precision equipment, IT services, transportation equipment and parts, retail, machinery and equipment, finance, insurance, construction, chemicals, and entertainment and culture—are trading lower. In contrast, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, food, beverages, and tobacco, and metals are showing slight gains.

Among the top-market-cap stocks on the KOSPI, SamsungElectronics(005930)is trading at 249,000 won, down 21,000 won (7.78%) from the previous trading day. SK hynix(000660)is trading at 1,769,000 won, down 150,000 won (7.82%) from the previous close.

Following these, SKSQUARE(402340)(-8.52%), SamsungElectroMechanics(009150)(-8.15%), HyundaiMotor(005380)(-7.64%), LG Energy Solution(373220)(-5.17%), HyundaiMotor(005380)(-7.64%), LG Energy Solution(373220)(-5.17%), Samsung Life Insurance(032830)(-4.86%), KB Financial Group(105560)(-4.03%), and KIA CORPORATION(000270)(-6.38%) are all trading lower.

At the same time, the KOSDAQ Index stands at 752.96, down 37.32 points (4.72%) from the previous trading day. On the KOSDAQ market as well, foreign and institutional investors are net sellers of 168.2 billion won and 272.0 billion won, respectively, while retail investors are net buyers of 442.1 billion won.

A sell-side circuit breaker was also triggered in the KOSDAQ market at 11:47 a.m. As the KOSDAQ 150 near-month futures contract fell 6.09% and the KOSDAQ 150 Index dropped 5.90% compared to the previous day—and this decline persisted for one minute—the effectiveness of sell orders in program trading was suspended for five minutes. At that time, net selling via program trading totaled 174.5 billion won.
