[Edaily Starin YUN GI BACK Reporter] The movie “Hope” has surpassed 3 million cumulative viewers just 11 days after its release. Having reached the 3 million milestone at the second-fastest pace this year, it is establishing itself as a film leading the success of Korean cinema even amid the strong performance of foreign films.

According to the Korean Film Council’s Integrated Computerized Ticket System on the 25th, “Hope” surpassed 3 million cumulative viewers around 1:30 p.m. that day. Achieved on its 11th day in theaters, this marks the second-fastest pace among films released this year, following Director Yeon Sang-ho’s “The Swarm” (10 days). Having previously surpassed the 1 million and 2 million viewer marks in the shortest time this year, “Hope” has now become the fourth film this year to reach 3 million viewers, following “The Man Who Lives with the King,” “The Swarm,” and “Salmokji.”
Since its release, “Hope” has topped the box office for 10 consecutive days, maintaining its lead even among competitors during the summer peak season. Now entering its second week, it continues to hold the No. 1 spot in Korean film ticket pre-sales, raising expectations for a long-term box office run.
Analysts attribute the film’s success to the buzz that continues even after viewers have seen it. Various interpretations of the film’s symbolism, ending, and world-building are spreading across online communities and social media platforms, driving audiences to watch the film multiple times. It is believed that these so-called “repeat viewings,” where viewers share new interpretations and details after watching the film, are fueling word-of-mouth and boosting the film’s box office momentum.
In addition, the film’s overwhelming scale and immersive experience—which can only be fully appreciated in theaters—are also receiving rave reviews from audiences. Its genre-bending experimentation, large-scale action sequences, and original visuals—elements rarely seen in previous Korean films—have earned it the title of the “Korean version of ‘Mad Max,’” and word of mouth is spreading that it is “a movie well worth the ticket price.”
Reactions from actual moviegoers are also enthusiastic. Praise continues to pour in, with comments such as “non-stop, breathless action,” “a cinematic experience unlike anything before,” and “the more times you watch it, the more new details you notice.” With a broad audience ranging from teenagers to middle-aged and older adults, the film’s box office momentum is expected to gain even more traction during the school break and vacation season.
“Hope” tells the story of Beom-seok, the head of the Hopo Port branch office near the Demilitarized Zone, who encounters a series of unbelievable events after hearing news that a tiger has appeared in the village. Combining director Na Hong-jin’s signature genre-bending imagination with intense direction, the film is establishing itself as a leading box office hit this summer, showcasing the strength of Korean cinema.
