Na Hong-jin’s ‘Hope’ Tops the Box Office… Riding a Box Office Success Amid Mixed Reviews

According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated computer network on the 28th, “Hope” retained the No. 1 spot at the box office on the 27th, drawing 103,416 viewers. Its cumulative audience count stands at 3,519,117.
In second place was Universal Pictures’ “Minions & Monsters,” which drew 21,402 viewers. Disney’s “Moana,” which garnered attention as a live-action adaptation of an animated film, took third place with 15,049 viewers. With a cumulative total of 924,319 viewers, “Moana” is approaching the 1 million mark.
Fourth place went to Disney·Pixar’s “Toy Story 5,” while fifth place was taken by “The Eye,” starring Shin Min-a.
“Hope” tells the story of Beom-seok, the head of the Hopo Port branch office near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), who, after receiving a report from local youths about a tiger sighting, is confronted with an unbelievable incident that shakes the entire village. Directed by Na Hong-jin, the film stars Hwang Jung-min, Jo In-sung, Jung Ho-yeon, Taylor Russell, Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Cameron Britton.
Since its release, “Hope” has continued to perform steadily at the box office despite polarizing reactions from audiences. Diverse interpretations and discussions among viewers are leading many to watch the film multiple times.
With Marvel’s new release, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” set to open on the 29th, all eyes are on whether “Hope” can maintain its long-term box office success.
