According to an E-Daily report on the 31st, Coupang Play’s “Bonjour Bakery” will air on KBS2 starting at 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday, August 5. This marks the first time KBS has scheduled an original online video service (OTT) program. While KBS previously scheduled Disney+’s “Twelve,” that was a simultaneous broadcast with Disney+. This is the first instance of KBS scheduling content that has already been released. It also demonstrates the network’s diversification of its programming lineup.
Given that “Bonjour Bakery” is a “healing program” that has moved viewers with every episode, KBS decided to air it after assessing the value of the content. A KBS spokesperson stated, “‘Bonjour Bakery’ features marginalized communities and senior citizens as its protagonists and promotes a spirit of warm togetherness. We determined that this public-service-oriented and timely premise aligns with the core value of public service that KBS pursues as an OTT platform, which is why we decided to broadcast it.” “Furthermore, recent trends in content consumption are shifting away from a platform-specific divide toward quality content reaching viewers across various platforms; therefore, broadcasting OTT content on terrestrial TV also serves to expand its reach to a broader audience,” they explained.
“Bonjour Bakery” is a feel-good variety show set in Korea’s first “senior dessert café,” which opened in a quiet rural village. It depicts seniors who have tasted the flavors of life and the bakery staff who know the taste of happiness as they share sweet comfort and warmth. Producer Park Geun-hyung of “You Quiz on the Block” and writer Kim Ran-ju of “Infinite Challenge” joined forces on the project, and with actors Kim Hee-ae, Cha Seung-won, Kim Seon-ho, and Lee Ki-taek starring, the show won the hearts of viewers with its heartwarming episodes each week. It also holds special significance as the first content released by writer Kim Ran-ju after she founded Studio Summer Day.
Immediately after its premiere, “Bonjour Bakery” debuted at No. 1 on Rakuten Viki’s weekly rankings in Southeast Asia and went on to firmly hold the top spot for five consecutive weeks in major Southeast Asian countries, achieving the best performance among Korean variety series.
