'Foreign Investors Make a Storm of Purchases Worth 5.7 Trillion Won'… Highest Single-Day Volume in July
Driven by a across-the-board rebound in semiconductor stocks on the New York Stock Exchange last night
[Edaily Reporter PARK MIN ] The KOSPI rebounded sharply by more than 16% in early trading on the 31st, recovering from three consecutive days of sharp declines and reclaiming the 6,500 level. #SK Hynix, the second-largest company by market capitalization, approached its daily price limit during the session, while SK Square (third-largest) and Samsung Electro-Mechanics (fourth-largest) both hit their daily price limits. This sharp rally is attributed to strong rebound buying following the recent excessive decline in stock prices, as well as a recovery in investor sentiment driven by a significant rise in semiconductor stocks on the New York Stock Exchange overnight.
According to MP Doctor, as of 10:13 a.m. today, the KOSPI is trading at 6,517.70, up 924.14 points (16.52%) from the previous trading day. It extended its gains early in the session, surging as high as 6,548.64, and triggered a temporary suspension of program buy orders (buy-side car) immediately after the market opened. By investor category, foreign investors led the sharp rise in the index with net purchases totaling 5.7684 trillion won. Following net purchases of 1.3299 trillion won in the KOSPI market the previous day, foreign investors have maintained a buying advantage for two consecutive days. Net purchases in the early trading session today exceeded three times the total net purchases made the previous day. In contrast, retail investors recorded net sales of 5.5171 trillion won, while institutional investors recorded net sales of 181.9 billion won.
#SK Hynix, which surged as much as 29.13% (1,715,000 won) to near the intraday price limit in an attempt to rebound, is currently up 28.14% at 1,694,000 won and continues to show strength, while #Samsung Electronics Preferred Shares are also rising 24.83%, attracting concentrated buying interest.
In addition, #SK Square, the third-largest company by market capitalization, surged 29.91%, and #Samsung Electro-Mechanics, the fourth-largest, jumped 29.92%, both trading at the daily price limit. #Hyundai Motor also rose 10.61%, posting a double-digit gain, while #Samsung Life Insurance rose 18.18% and #LG Energy Solution rose 1.41%.
At the same time, the KOSDAQ is trading at 708.02, up 63.24 points (9.81%) from the previous trading day. As buying momentum spreads across growth stocks—including semiconductors, IT, and rechargeable batteries—the KOSDAQ has recovered the 700-point level during the session and is extending its gains.
Like the KOSPI, the KOSDAQ triggered a buy-side sidecar early in the session. The KOSDAQ sidecar is triggered when the price of the KOSDAQ 150 futures rises by more than 6% from the benchmark price and the KOSDAQ 150 Index rises by more than 3% from the closing level of the previous trading day, and both conditions persist simultaneously for one minute.
By investor type, institutions and foreign investors drove the index higher with net purchases of 93.6 billion won and 87.5 billion won, respectively. In contrast, retail investors recorded net sales of 181.3 billion won. Of the 1,467 KOSDAQ stocks, 1,467 rose while 222 fell, indicating a broadly bullish market.
Among the top KOSDAQ stocks by market capitalization, #Alteogen is trading at 303,000 won, up 8.41% from the previous trading day. #Ecopro, a leading secondary battery stock, rose 14.31%, while #Ecopro BM rose 8.81%. #Rainbow Robotics (14.75%), #Juseong Engineering (27.26%), and #Wonik IPS (24.51%) also rose sharply, contributing to the overall strength of the index.
The sharp rise in the stock market today is attributed to a recovery in investor sentiment following a recent excessive correction in stock prices and a significant rise in semiconductor stocks on the New York Stock Exchange overnight. On the 30th (local time), the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index—comprising 30 major U.S.-listed semiconductor stocks—rose 8.19%, and major semiconductor stocks such as Micron Technology (18.36%), SanDisk (25.99%), AMD (13.00%), and Intel (11.30%) recorded double-digit gains.
Han Ji-young, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities, predicted, “The KOSPI is expected to rebound, driven by expectations that the deleveraging trend in the semiconductor sector will ease, Amazon’s after-hours stock price surging by over 9% following an earnings surprise, and KOSPI 200 overnight futures hitting the daily upper limit.”
