HIS Youth is a youth competition that Boryung and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity have been co-hosting since 2024 to discover future talent in space life sciences. This year, approximately 1,700 elementary, middle, and high school students from across the country, along with their supervising teachers, participated.
This year’s competition was held under the theme “Solving Humanity’s Health Problems on the Moon.” Participating students presented research and creative projects on health and life sciences in the lunar environment. Approximately 300 people attended the event, including Boryung CEO Kim Jeong-kyun, Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity Chairman WOOSUNG Jeong, officials from KOREA AEROSPACE INDUSTRIES, participating students, and parents.
During the finals, Dr. Fathi Karouia, a member of NASA’s Astrobiology Portfolio, delivered a special lecture introducing the latest research trends in the field of space life sciences.
This year’s winning entries are set to be transmitted to the Moon—a first for creative works by Korean youth. They will be delivered to the lunar surface in the form of digital storage media through the “Lunar Time Capsule Project,” which utilizes the “IM-3” lunar lander mission by the U.S. private space company Intuitive Machines.
This project will also carry the “LUSEM” lunar space environment monitor developed by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, along with materials from the National Gwacheon Science Museum and the National Folk Museum of Korea, as well as messages from the public.
Winners in the middle and high school divisions will also be offered a study tour in October to visit major U.S. space agencies and companies, including NASA and Intuitive Machines. Participating students will tour space life science research facilities and have the opportunity to interact with experts.
Earlier this past July, Boryung held an in-person educational program at Yonsei University, where CEO Kim Jeong-kyun and Dr. Lee So-yeon—South Korea’s first astronaut—delivered lectures on the topic of space life sciences.
Kim Jeong-kyun, CEO of Boryung, said, “We hope that through HIS Youth, students’ creative ideas will lead to the future of space life sciences,” adding, “We will continue to expand our diverse educational programs so that future generations can grow into the talent that will lead the space age.”
