[Edaily Reporter LEE SEON-WOO ] The “Obama Presidential Center,” a memorial dedicated to former U.S. President Barack Obama, is gaining attention as one of Chicago’s premier “Unique Venues” just a month and a half after its opening. “Unique Venue” is a term used in the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industry to describe facilities that possess distinctive local cultural and historical characteristics, making them ideal for hosting events with unique concepts.
Due to a flood of requests following the opening, the center temporarily suspended event venue rentals in early July but recently resumed them after about three weeks. The museum, the center’s flagship facility, is also experiencing explosive popularity. Museum tickets—which sold out immediately after the opening and went back on sale on the 8th of last month—sold out completely within two hours, and reservations are now fully booked through the end of November.
Located in Jackson Park near the University of Chicago—the site of the 1893 World’s Fair—the center is the first privately built and operated presidential memorial in the United States. Construction began in 2021, seven years after the project was first proposed, and the center officially opened this past June, approximately five years later. With a construction cost of $850 million, the center is referred to as a “campus” due to its diverse array of facilities.
Covering a total area of approximately 80,000 square meters, the campus features four buildings (the Museum, the Forum, Home Court, and the Public Library), as well as outdoor gardens and playgrounds, and includes 27 event spaces ranging in size from 37 square meters to 1,150 square meters. The entire campus can host large-scale events for over 2,000 people.

The “Museum,” a tower-shaped building with eight floors and a height of approximately 70 meters, is the campus’s flagship facility. The permanent exhibition halls, spread across four floors and featuring recreations of spaces such as the Oval Office—the President’s office at the White House—charge admission fees ranging from $15 to $30, depending on age and place of residence. The Skyroom on the museum’s top floor (8th floor), which overlooks Lake Michigan, is also used as a venue for small-scale events.
“Home Court,” equipped with an NBA-regulation basketball court, is the largest event space on campus, capable of hosting events for up to 999 people at a time. Another event facility, “The Forum,” features a total of seven dedicated event spaces, including the 299-seat Elie Wiesel Auditorium and the Hadiya Pendleton Atrium, which can accommodate up to 300 people. The rooftop space on the third floor of the building can also be used for standing receptions for up to 600 people.
