[Edaily Reporter Park Ji-hye ] While Japan is on high alert as it is predicted to be affected by a “double typhoon” during the Obon holiday—which is comparable to Korea’s Chuseok—South Korea is battling a heat wave.

On the morning of the 7th, Japan’s TBS reported, “Typhoon No. 13, a powerful storm, is forecast to make a direct hit on Okinawa today,” adding, “Starting on the 8th, the slow-moving typhoon is expected to affect the Obon holiday—which lasts up to nine days—for about two days.”
The network continued, “While Typhoon No. 15, which could approach the north on the 11th, remains highly unpredictable, the ‘double typhoon’ situation is already causing disruptions to transportation. “One hundred flights were canceled yesterday, and the impact is expected to affect about 75,000 people today and tomorrow as travel during the Obon holiday begins,” the report noted, adding, “On Yakushima, which is accessible by ferry from Kagoshima, cancellations led to about 200 guests canceling their stays at one accommodation facility.”
Japan’s FNN also reported that day, “Okinawa entered the typhoon’s path around 4 a.m. this morning, with strong winds blowing, trees swaying violently, and heavy rain pouring down at times. As a result, all vehicle traffic has been banned, and approximately 3,000 households in the north are without power, causing disruptions to daily life.”
The report continued, “The typhoon is expected to make its closest approach to Okinawa this afternoon, with maximum gusts of 55 km/h—strong enough to snap utility poles and street trees.”
Meanwhile, South Korea, which has been sweltering under extreme heat approaching 40 degrees, is expected to be spared by the twin typhoons.
The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasted that Typhoon No. 13, “Dolphin,” would pass through Okinawa today and make landfall south of Shanghai, China, around the 10th.
Although the typhoon will pass by, it is expected to disrupt the two high-pressure systems that had been overlapping along its path.
As a result, the heat is expected to subside starting this weekend, the 8th.
Early next week, temperatures in Seoul are expected to drop to around 33 degrees, while Daegu is forecast to fall to 30 degrees.
However, temperatures above 30 degrees are expected to continue for the time being.
Easterly winds are expected to blow more strongly between the high-pressure system to the north and the typhoon to the south. While the east coast will see heavy rain and a drop in temperature starting this weekend due to these easterly winds, temperatures in the west—including Seoul—will remain high because the winds will be warmed as they cross the mountain ranges.
The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts that starting on the morning of the 8th, the eastern coast and mountainous areas of Gangwon Province will see rainfall of up to 120 mm or more.
