According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated computer network on the 7th, “The Martian” took the No. 1 spot at the box office on the 6th, drawing 245,794 viewers. Its cumulative audience count stands at 539,514, surpassing the 500,000-viewer mark just two days after its release.
As of 8:00 a.m. on the 7th, “The Odyssey” is receiving rave reviews, with a 9.26 rating from actual moviegoers and a 9.07 rating from netizens on Naver. It also maintains a high audience satisfaction rate, with a CGV Golden Egg Index of 97%. The film easily surpassed the record set by “Interstellar” (227,025 viewers), which had previously held the record for the highest opening-weekend attendance among director Nolan’s films released in South Korea.
“The Odyssey” follows the journey of Odysseus (played by Matt Damon), the hero who led the Trojan War to victory after a decade-long conflict, as he sets out to return to his wife Penelope (played by Anne Hathaway) and his son Telemachus (played by Tom Holland).
In particular, it garnered attention as the first film in history to be shot entirely with IMAX film cameras. By capturing vast natural landscapes and large-scale battle scenes with breathtaking visuals, it is driving a box office boom centered on special-format theaters.
In fact, as soon as advance ticket sales for *The Odyssey* began on July 9—one month before its release—it caused a “ticket-booking frenzy,” leading to delays in accessing the CGV website and app. In particular, seats for prime showtimes at “Yong-IMAX” (CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall IMAX) sold out well in advance, demonstrating the intense public interest.

The momentum of “Spider-Man: A Brand New Day” (Spider-Man 4) is also impressive. On that day alone, “Spider-Man 4” drew 237,605 viewers, bringing its cumulative total to 4,869,745. While “The Odyssey” is gaining momentum in its early days, “Spider-Man 4” is also demonstrating its box office strength by consistently maintaining daily attendance in the 200,000 range, even on its ninth day of release.
Third place at the daily box office went to the Korean animated film “Love Hachuping: The Legend of the Whale Gem.” As the sequel released two years after the original, “Love Hachuping: The Legend of the Whale Gem” drew 43,714 viewers, demonstrating its staying power.
Director Na Hong-jin’s *Hope* took fourth place with 27,128 viewers, while *Minions & Monsters* took fifth place with 4,638 viewers.
