This is interpreted as a sign of improved investor sentiment toward the related industry, as the government has begun the process of selecting a candidate site for the Second Space Center in earnest. The Korea Aerospace Administration announced that the Gwangju-Jeonnam Integrated Special City and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province submitted applications for the Second Space Center construction site competition, which concluded on the 6th. Gwangju-Jeonnam proposed Goheung—where the existing Naro Space Center is located—as its candidate site, while Jeju reportedly proposed a plan for offshore launches near Jungmun in Seogwipo.
The Second Space Center is being developed as a space hub responsible for the launch, landing, and maintenance of the reusable next-generation launch vehicles currently under development by the government. The government plans to construct facilities covering approximately 1.7 million pyeong by 2034 to enable the operation of reusable launch vehicles more than 10 times a year by the mid-to-late 2030s.
After reviewing the basic requirements for the construction site, the Korea Aerospace Administration plans to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of launch operability, the environment for building launch infrastructure, and site-specific and social conditions, with the final site to be selected this October. Expectations that large-scale investment in space infrastructure will begin in earnest are spreading across the entire aerospace sector.
