[Edaily Reporter Park Ji-hye ] While Japan is on high alert due to a series of approaching typhoons, South Korea is expected to see not just a brief shower during the Liberation Day holiday, but heavy and prolonged rainfall.

According to local Japanese media outlets such as Hokuriku Broadcasting on the 12th, a tropical depression off the coast of the Ogasawara Islands developed into Typhoon No. 17, “Nangka,” on that day. Nangka is predicted to move northeast before turning northwest around the 14th and approaching Japan.
Currently, the maximum wind speed near the center of Nangka is 18 meters per second, but Japan’s Meteorological Agency forecasts that rain clouds associated with the typhoon will gradually develop over the southeastern waters off the Kanto region on the 15th before the typhoon approaches.

Japan is on high alert for Nangka, which is following a path similar to that of Typhoon No. 17 “Chan-hom,” which made landfall the previous day.
Chanhom, which caused damage from strong winds as it passed through Japan, took an unusual path—moving from east to west across the country—due to the influence of a high-pressure system to the northeast and a cold vortex in the skies to the southwest.
Chanhom has now dissipated, leaving only moisture in its wake; as a result, up to 50 mm of rain is expected along the east coast of Gangwon Province in South Korea through the 14th.
Up to 40 mm of rain is also expected in South Gyeongsang Province, which is suffering from severe drought.
Starting with the Liberation Day holiday weekend, rain may also fall in the western inland regions.
This is because a large amount of water vapor left behind by Typhoon No. 13 “Dolphin”—which weakened after making landfall in China—is expected to flow toward South Korea.
Rain is forecast for Jeju on August 15 (Liberation Day) and nationwide from the night of August 16 through August 17, which is a substitute holiday.
However, the forecast remains highly variable, and depending on the amount of moisture flowing in and the atmospheric pressure patterns, the rain in some areas could go beyond a light shower and develop into heavy rain requiring precautions.
