Hanteo Global recently held a kickoff meeting at Who’s Fan Studio for the “K-Culture Power Index (KCPI) – Development of the National Standard Culture Index,” a policy-driven project supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA).
The official project title is “Development of KCPI Generation and Influence Analysis Service Technologies for Quantifying the Global Influence of the Korean Wave.” With a total R&D budget of 5.11667 billion won (including 4.1 billion won in government funding), the research will continue through December 31, 2028.
Hanteo Global explained, “The KCPI is a key policy-driven project aimed at establishing scientific and data-based grounds for policies promoting the global spread of the Korean Wave,” adding, “Through this project, we will complete the indexing of six core industries: music, broadcasting and drama, film, games, webtoons and animation, and publishing and characters.” The company further elaborated, “We plan to expand this initiative to include the three major K-lifestyle-related industries—fashion, beauty, and food—to complete a big data and AI intelligence system that encompasses K-culture as a whole.”
Participants in this R&D project include the lead organization, Hanteo Global, as well as a team led by Professor Kim Tae-kyung from the Department of Big Data Applications at Kyung Hee University; a team led by Professor Lim Dong-hyuk from the School of Information Convergence and the Department of Applied Artificial Intelligence at Kwangwoon University; O-Motion; Dost11; and the Korea Federation of Broadcasting Engineers.
Hanteo Global will oversee the design of the entire KCPI architecture, drawing on 34 years of accumulated real-time global point-of-sale (POS) data, data lake integration technology, and expertise in AI-based data cleansing and the development and operation of machine learning models. Kwak Young-ho, CEO of Hanteo Chart and the project’s principal investigator, has led a total of 47 government-funded R&D and commercialization projects (worth 4 billion won) over the past 20 years.
CEO Kwak Young-ho stated, “Being selected as the lead agency for a government-funded project to standardize a national-level cultural index is a recognition of Hanteo Global’s data technology capabilities and credibility, which we have built through continuous research, development, and refinement since 1993 as South Korea’s first music chart.” He added, “We will ensure public benefit by providing the National Cultural Index Report and related data free of charge to the government and public sectors, while in the private B2B sector, we will take Hanteo Global’s corporate value to the next level through proprietary consulting and dedicated data subscription services.”
