[Edaily Starin Choi Hee-jae Reporter] Actress Song Hye-kyo and Professor Seo Kyung-deok of Sungshin Women’s University have once again taken steps to raise awareness of history in observance of the 81st anniversary of Liberation Day. The video chronicles how Park Ja-hye, while working as a nurse at the Japanese Government-General of Korea’s Hospital in 1919, came to realize the harsh reality facing her people while treating the wounded from the March 1st Movement, leading her to form the “Nurses’ Association,” an organization of nurses dedicated to the independence movement. In particular, it highlights in detail how Park Ja-hye continued her path in the independence movement by fleeing to China, marrying Shin Chae-ho, and assisting Na Seok-ju’s act of resistance upon her return to Korea. Professor Seo stated, “We have produced this seventh video—following those on Jeong Jeong-hwa, Yoon Hee-soon, Kim Maria, Park Cha-jeong, Kim Hyang-hwa, and Nam Ja-hyun—to shed new light on the lives of female independence activists who are not well known to the public and to introduce them widely both domestically and internationally.” He added, “We plan to continue producing multilingual video series on more female independence activists and steadily promote them both at home and abroad.” Professor Seo also noted, “We are currently distributing the videos not only on YouTube but also through various social media platforms, and we are sharing them with Korean communities around the world to raise awareness.” For the past 15 years, Song Hye-kyo and Professor Seo have been raising awareness about Korea’s independence movement and history by donating Korean-language guidebooks, Hangul signs, and bas-relief sculptures of independence activists to 40 historic sites related to the independence movement.
