In the MBC Friday-Saturday drama *Married Woman Killer*, Gong Hyo-jin plays the dual roles of “Kingfisher,” a legendary sniper, and Yoo Bo-na, an ordinary working mom, showcasing two contrasting sides of her character.
In the recently released behind-the-scenes footage, Gong Hyo-jin’s preparation process to convincingly portray this character’s duality drew particular attention. Prior to filming, she mastered martial arts choreography at an action school and trained in firearm handling and shooting posture. She even took up kickboxing to build her physical strength in preparation for the action scenes.
On set, she meticulously coordinated her movements with the stunt team for every action scene. Rather than simply portraying a gun-wielding killer, she focused on creating the aura of a seasoned sniper through restrained movements and her gaze.
Gong Hyo-jin’s signature naturalistic acting style was utilized to portray “Yoo Bo-na, the working mom.” She spent time with Hwang Bom-i, who played her daughter Kwon Yul, even when they weren’t filming, to build a natural rapport, and she consistently worked to develop chemistry with the actors playing other family members and coworkers.
A notable aspect of this project is the combination of realistic characters—a genre Gong Hyo-jin is familiar with—and the action genre. Gong Hyo-jin, who has demonstrated strength in down-to-earth performances, is attempting a departure from her usual image by adding the extreme premise of a professional killer to her everyday life as an “ordinary mom and office worker.”
It is reported that even after filming, she continued to review footage and exchange ideas with the director to fine-tune details such as her facial expressions and eye contact. Rather than the intensity of the action, the key to this character lies in creating a contrast between her ordinary daily life and her identity as a killer.
In a recent episode, Yoo Bo-na found herself on the verge of running into her husband Kwon Tae-sung (played by Jung Joon-won) at a meeting with a client, foreshadowing a crack in her double life. How Yoo Bo-na’s situation—having to hide her identity as a killer from her family—will unfold has emerged as a key point of interest.
Through her agency, Gong Hyo-jin shared her thoughts on taking on this new genre, saying, “Action acting itself was a huge challenge for me,” and added, “I learned kickboxing while preparing for this project, and I really enjoyed the process of pouring my energy into it.”
“Married Woman Killer” airs every Friday and Saturday at 9:50 p.m. on MBC.
