[Edaily Starin YUN GI BACK Reporter] A grand piano, a guitar, an analog synthesizer, a single chair, and a small table—even the white mug sitting on top of it. That was all that filled the stage.

The final performance of the “2026 Jeong Jun-il Intimate Concert—Piano Summer Voice” took place on the 16th at the Yeongsan Theater in the ECC building at Ewha Womans University in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul. Instead of a lavishly decorated stage, Jeong Jun-il connected with the audience in the way he knows best: through the piano, his voice, and his songs.
The lights dimmed, and Jeong Jun-il and his longtime musical partner, producer Kwon Young-chan, appeared on stage. Jeong Jun-il sat on a white chair, while Kwon Young-chan took his place at the piano. Soon, as the keys began to ring out, Jeong Jun-il’s voice quietly filled the space.
There was hardly any speaking. One song followed another: “Ian,” “Curse,” “Hope,” “Love Again,” Mate’s “I Miss You,” “Don’t Leave My Side,” and “Polar Bear.” Only after singing six songs without pause did Jeong Jun-il briefly say, “Thank you.”
The audience wasn’t in a hurry either. Rather than filling the gaps with applause after each song ended, they waited for the next sound. Jeong Jun-il, too, remained immersed in the music, closing his eyes or looking down rather than making eye contact with the audience. The audience quietly watched him.

As a result, even the slightest sound came through clearly—from the sound of his fingers pressing the piano keys to the breath he took before starting a song, and even the subtle tremor at the end of a note. Thanks to the minimalist stage and the close proximity, moments that would normally have gone unnoticed became an integral part of the performance.
The performance resembled the summer as seen through Jeong Jun-il’s eyes. It felt less like the scorching midday heat and more like a breezy evening or the dawn when the sound of grasshoppers could be heard. Some songs brushed by lightly, while others sank deeply, as if unearthing long-buried sorrow. Shy youth, past loves, and feelings that were hard to express flowed one after another within the season of summer.
A medley of Yoon Jong-shin’s “Annie,” “The End of a Sentence,” “Silence,” “You Did Well,” and “You Moved Me” briefly lightened the mood. After hitting the final high note in “You Moved Me,” he even joked that he wanted to say “goodbye” to Yoon Jong-shin with this performance as his last.
Following “First Snow” and “Unrequited Love,” the emotional intensity of the performance deepened during his signature song, “Hold Me.” His voice, imbued with his characteristic tremor, was layered over the lyrical piano melody. The song, which had accompanied Jung Joon-il through his twenties, filled the venue like an old letter being opened again after all this time.

During “Confession,” even the long sigh he let out before singing was audible. The song, which began after that brief sigh, embraced even the preceding silence as part of a single emotional moment.
By the time he reached “Blue End” in the latter half of the set, Jeong Jun-il—who had been seated the entire time—stood up for the first time. He bent deeply at the waist as he poured out the high notes, and during “Sleep in Summer,” he sang while gazing intently at Kwon Young-chan, who was playing the piano. The atmosphere of the performance, which had been flowing gently, gradually began to heat up.
For the encore, “Late Morning,” Jeong Jun-il sat down at the piano himself. Recalling his childhood memories of playing the piano, he sang while playing the keys. The concert, which had begun with Kwon Young-chan’s piano and Jeong Jun-il’s voice, drew to a close as Jeong Jun-il’s playing and singing blended into one.

This tradition of sharing songs so closely with the audience has continued for a full decade now, beginning with the 2016 “Winter” concert. However, Jeong Jun-il mentioned that he had received advice from his doctor that day to avoid straining his voice for the time being. “It looks like I’ll have to put small-venue concerts on hold for a while,” he said, expressing his regret: “I really hope to see you all again soon.”
The reason this stage has endured for so long was clear. It wasn’t a one-sided performance by the singer, but rather a way of offering songs while the audience layered their own memories and emotions on top of them. As if entrusting the sorrow he couldn’t share with anyone else to the songs, Jeong Jun-il let his music flow out into the audience that day. Where those songs would land and what memories they would evoke was up to the listener.
That is why Jeong Jun-il’s small-theater concert was closer to a “performance to listen to” than one “to watch.” Though the stage was not filled with much, it was as vivid as it was serene, and as rich as it was uncluttered.
