“The Assassin(s)” is a mystery film inspired by the August 15, 1974, assassination attempt on the First Lady, tracing the suspicions and forces behind the incident. Based on a real event in modern history and enhanced with cinematic imagination, the film depicts the stories of characters pursuing the truth.
Yoo Hae-jin, Park Hae-il, and Lee Min-ho star as characters investigating the incident from different perspectives. Yoo Hae-jin plays Cheol-gu, a detective who witnesses the shooting and sets out to uncover those behind it, while Park Hae-il portrays Jae-hwan, the head of a newspaper’s social affairs department who digs for the truth. Lee Min-ho takes on the role of Young-il, a rookie reporter who throws himself into the heart of the incident. The film’s core structure lies in its approach to a single event through the distinct perspectives of a detective, a veteran reporter, and a rookie reporter.
The film is directed by Hur Jin-ho, known for works such as *Christmas in August*, *Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring*, *Princess Deokhye*, and *Cheonmun: A Question to the Sky*. Director Hur, who has meticulously captured characters’ emotions in romantic dramas and period pieces, is now drawing attention for how he will blend a real-life event from modern history with the mystery genre.
The production team also played a key role. Led by cinematographer Lee Mo-gae, along with lighting director Lee Seong-hwan and production designer Kim Byeong-han, they brought the settings and atmosphere of the 1970s to life.
The film has also garnered early attention overseas. *The Assassin(s)* was officially invited to the Gala Section of the 51st Toronto International Film Festival. It will be showcased at an international film festival ahead of its domestic release.
