[Edaily Reporter KIM YOON-JEONG ] SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. is surging by more than 8% in early trading. This is believed to be driven by expectations of a revaluation of its stake and the expansion of its energy storage system (ESS) business in North America, following the company’s decision to sell a portion of its stake in Samsung Display for 4.45 trillion won.

According to MP Doctor on the 24th, as of 9:30 a.m. today, SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD.(006400)is trading at 515,000 won, up 38,500 won (8.05%) from the previous trading day.
Previously, on the 21st after the market closed, SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. announced that it had decided to transfer 13.08 million shares—representing approximately 5% of its 15.2% stake in Samsung Display—to Samsung Display for 4.45 trillion won. The sale price per share is 340,000 won, and the transaction is scheduled for the 27th. Following the sale, SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD.’s stake in Samsung Display will decrease to 10.2%.
The securities industry viewed the sale positively, noting that it provided a basis for revaluing the value of the Samsung Display stake, secured investment funds to expand ESS production capacity in North America, and reduced short-term financing burdens.
Ahn Hoe-soo, an analyst at DB Securities, noted, “With a book value of 4.8 trillion won corresponding to a 15.2% stake as of the end of the second quarter of 2026, the revaluation of the 5% stake from 1.6 trillion won to 4.45 trillion won has generated a gain on disposal and established a basis for revaluing the remaining stake.”
DB Securities estimated that the cash inflow from the sale will be used for facility investments at Synergy Cells in Indiana, U.S. Synergy Cells is a battery manufacturing subsidiary that SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. plans to convert into a wholly-owned entity by terminating its joint venture agreement with General Motors (GM) and acquiring GM’s entire 49.99% stake.
ShinyoungSecurities highlighted that the method for securing funds to expand ESS production capacity has been finalized. Park Jin-soo, an analyst at ShinyoungSecurities, stated, “We view this disclosure positively as it clarifies the funding method for expanding ESS battery capacity in North America,” adding, “Based on the proceeds from the sale, local investments through Synergy Cells are expected to accelerate, and SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD.’s North American ESS battery capacity is projected to increase from approximately 30 GWh at the end of this year to over 50 GWh by the end of 2028.”
SamsungSecurities viewed it positively that Samsung SDI secured approximately 4.5 trillion won in cash through the sale of its stake in Samsung Display, thereby alleviating the short-term funding burden required for the North American ESS expansion. Jang Jeong-hoon, an analyst at SamsungSecurities, commented, “This is positive news because it represents the partial monetization of non-operating assets and will resolve the immediate funding burden for the upcoming North American expansion in the short term.”
All three securities firms maintained their “Buy” investment rating on SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. ShinyoungSecurities maintained its target price at 700,000 won, DB Securities at 680,000 won, and SamsungSecurities at 550,000 won.
