[Edaily Reporter kyoungeun kim ] On the afternoon of the 24th, the KOSPI index extended its losses and fell to the 6,600 level, driven by a sharp decline in Samsung Group stocks, including SamsungElectronics. According to MP Doctor, as of 1:35 p.m. that day, the KOSPI was trading at 6,696.36, down 216.59 points (3.13%) from the previous trading day. Although it rose as high as 6,884.57 during the session, it later fell to 6,656.07, widening its losses. On the 24th, as the KOSPI opened slightly lower, a display board in the trading room at Hana Bank’s headquarters in Jung-gu, Seoul, shows the KOSPI, KOSDAQ, and the won-dollar exchange rate. In program trading, there was a net purchase of 180.3 billion won in arbitrage trading, but a net sale of 2.5679 trillion won in non-arbitrage trading, resulting in an overall net selling volume of 2.3876 trillion won. SamsungElectronics’ large-scale shareholder return plan, announced after the market closed last Friday, is seen as a “dead issue” today, contributing to the market’s decline. Kim Ki-baek, an analyst at Shinhan Investment Securities, noted, “Although SamsungElectronics announced a shareholder return package totaling 90 trillion to 110 trillion won—including a special dividend of 30 trillion won—and planned further announcements during its third-quarter earnings release, the results failed to meet market expectations and are now viewed as a ‘dead issue.’” In fact, Samsung affiliates such as Samsung Life Insurance (-10.8%) and SAMSUNG C&T CORPORATION (-7.9%) also plummeted in tandem today. However, analysts note that rotational trading remains active despite the sharp declines. Analyst Kim explained, “Although the KOSPI has fallen below its 120-day moving average, 504 stocks are up, indicating active rotational trading,” adding, “Sectors such as defense, cosmetics, and rechargeable battery stocks are showing strength.” On the global front, the August Standard & Poor’s (S&P) Global Composite Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) hit a 56-month high, driven by strong performance in the service sector. However, with Middle East negotiations at a standstill and economic sanctions pending, along with caution ahead of NVIDIA’s earnings report scheduled for the morning of the 27th, movement in semiconductor-related stocks appears limited. There are also forecasts that the memory supply shortage will persist, as reports emerge that NVIDIA has notified major clients of a price increase of more than 15% for next year’s products. Top-market-cap stocks, led by Samsung Group shares, are plummeting. SamsungElectronics(005930)is trading at 256,500 won, down 25,000 won (8.88%), while Samsung Life Insurance(032830)has plunged 36,000 won (10.96%) to 292,500 won. Foreign and institutional investors are net buying 149.6 billion won and 46.4 billion won, respectively, while retail investors are net selling 187.9 billion won. Analysts note that capital flowing out of SamsungElectronics is moving into the KOSDAQ market, driving a simultaneous rally in secondary battery and semiconductor component stocks. Among the top KOSDAQ stocks by market capitalization, ECOPRO BM CO., LTD.(247540)is trading at 114,900 won, up 9,300 won (8.81%), and ECOPRO CO., LTD(086520)is trading at 86,300 won, up 4,600 won (5.63%). PharmaResearch(214450)(+3.50%) is also trading higher. On the other hand, Rainbow Robotics(277810)(-2.42%), EO Technics Co., Ltd.(039030)(-2.72%), and WONIK IPS Co.,Ltd.(240810)(-0.65%) are trading lower. Biotech stocks are generally mixed.
