Will "Commute-Home ETFs" Be Excluded from the Exchange's After-Hours Market Next Month?
Korea Exchange After-Market Set to Open Next Month
Exclusion of Exchange-Traded Products (ETPs) from Trading Appears Likely
The Impact of Factors Such as Single-Stock Leverage That Have Increased Market Volatility
[Edaily Reporter Kwon Oh Seok ] It has been decided that trading in exchange-traded products (ETPs) will be excluded from the Korea Exchange’s after-hours market (4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.), which is scheduled to open next month. (Photo: Korea Exchange) According to the financial investment industry and other sources on the 28th, financial authorities and the Korea Exchange are pushing to include exchange-traded products (ETPs) among the instruments excluded from trading in the revised implementation rules for the after-market, which are set to be announced shortly. If the amendments are finalized, trading of all ETPs—including exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and exchange-traded notes (ETNs)—is expected to be completely restricted during the after-hours market. Previously, the Korea Exchange had been accelerating preparations for the introduction of an after-market—scheduled to open on the 14th of next month and operate from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.—to meet that deadline. Initially, the Korea Exchange had planned to allow after-market trading of various ETP products, including ETFs. However, it is believed that the exchange proactively withdrew this plan following criticism that single-stock leveraged and inverse ETFs—based on assets such as SamsungElectronics(005930)and SK hynix(000660) —had further exacerbated market volatility amid the recent global semiconductor market correction. Industry observers expect a notice of proposed amendments to the implementing rules to be issued shortly.
