Up to 300 won per hour when used during the day on weekends
[Edaily Reporter JAEMIN SONG ] SamsungElectronics is partnering with KoreaElectricPower (KEPCO) to launch a pilot program that offers cashback to consumers who use smart home appliances during peak renewable energy generation hours.
(Photo: SamsungElectronics) SamsungElectronics announced that it will run the “Smart Appliance Cashback” program for two months starting September 1 and has set up an integration feature to allow customers to easily apply through the SmartThings app.
This initiative was launched to encourage the use of home appliances during periods when renewable energy generation—such as solar power—is abundant, thereby promoting the efficient use of electricity.
Participating customers who use eligible appliances between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on weekends and public holidays will receive 100 won in cashback per 1 kWh of electricity consumed. The maximum payout per hour is 300 won. Accumulated cashback can be applied as a credit toward electricity bills or refunded.
Eligible products include four items—washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, and garment care machines—that account for a high proportion of electricity usage but whose operating times can be relatively easily adjusted.
Users of Samsung Smart Appliances can sign up for the cashback program via the SmartThings app. Simply select the “Energy” service under the “Life” tab in the app and tap the “Smart Appliance Cashback” connection button. On the linked page, sign up for an account and agree to share your device usage data to complete the setup.
Afterward, users can receive benefits by using Samsung Smart Home appliances connected to the SmartThings app during eligible cashback hours. Detailed application instructions and benefits can also be found on the dedicated information page on Samsung.com.
(Photo: SamsungElectronics) You can also use SmartThings’ scheduling feature to automatically run appliances during eligible time periods. If you set your washer or dryer to run on weekend mornings in advance, you can receive cashback benefits without having to check the time separately.
SamsungElectronics also offers features through SmartThings Energy that allow users to monitor the real-time power consumption of connected appliances and reduce energy usage via “AI Power Saving Mode.”
The company is also expanding its collaborations with international energy companies. SamsungElectronics is pursuing energy partnerships with Enel in Italy, British Gas in the UK, and CoolBlue in the Netherlands to offer electricity cost savings.
Last June, in collaboration with Enel, the company launched a service offering up to 180 kWh of free electricity for laundry use over two years to customers who purchase Samsung washing machines. With British Gas, it introduced a rate plan that provides a 50% discount on weekend electricity bills.
In May, Samsung became the first South Korean company to sign the European Union’s (EU) “Smart Appliance Energy Code of Conduct,” laying the groundwork for expanded energy cooperation in Europe.
