Actor Seol Kyung-gu, who turned 59 this year, made these remarks regarding his passionate action performance in the Netflix series *Field Mouse*. In an interview held on the 2nd at a café in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, Seol Kyung-gu confessed, “To be honest, I was worried,” adding, “I had to run, and even though we had safety measures in place, I was very concerned because I didn’t know what dangers might arise.”
However, he added, “I don’t know why they gave me action scenes, but since I was given the role, I had to do it—so I just had fun with it.”
The Netflix series *Field Mouse* is a suspense thriller that follows novelist “Moon-jae”—who has had his name, face, and entire life stolen by a mysterious entity known as “Field Mouse”—along with loan shark “No-ja,” who is trying to recover his lost money, and detective “Sun-yong” as they hunt down Field Mouse’s true identity. In this series, Seol Kyung-gu played the role of No-ja. While investigating "Field Mouse," they engage in countless fights and face numerous crises. Seol Kyung-gu heightened the drama’s immersion by portraying this role with great nuance.
Seol Kyung-gu said he found the script for *The Field Mouse* entertaining, adding, “I found the character of Noja interesting. I felt I could play him freely.”
As time goes on, No-ja reveals subtle emotions toward Moon-jae. He said, “While some of his changes might be due to seeing Moon-jae, I also wonder if No-ja’s own heart has changed.” He continued, “A life spent committing only evil deeds actually leads one to reflect on oneself through those actions, and as they journey together, the past keeps replaying in their mind.” He explained, “In the process, he becomes disillusioned with that way of life and longs for a place where he can rediscover the person he was before committing those evil deeds—that’s how I think No-ja’s heart changed.”
Seol Kyung-gu stated, “That’s why Laozi, feeling sorry for Mun-jae, tells him not to live a fake life but to live authentically. I thought that what he was saying to himself was what he was saying to Mun-jae,” and added, “The idea that ‘no matter what kind of life you lead, you must live it authentically’ seems to run through the entire story.”
Regarding Laozi’s final moments, he confided, “I thought he needed to be restrained in a playful way,” adding, “I felt he had to face the consequences of his evil deeds. Only by receiving punishment can everything return to normal.”
Regarding Ryu Jun-yeol, his co-star in this project, he said, “One of Ryu Jun-yeol’s strengths is that he has a very strong personality but a very ordinary-looking face.” He continued, “I think our show features ordinary people who seem a bit empty rather than supernatural beings. He seems like the perfect actor for that role.”
He continued, “There’s a lot of narration in the first episode, and Ryu Jun-yeol has a great voice and delivery,” adding, “We were very worried about the first episode, and I felt that if it hadn’t been for Jun-yeol’s narration, we would have been in big trouble.”
Seol Kyung-gu explained, “Since we have a lot of car scenes, we often talked in the car. We had many good conversations.” He continued, “Ryu Jun-yeol offers a lot of suggestions and ideas. If something seems good, we try it; if not, we just let it go.” He remarked, “I was grateful that he even took the time to think about my concerns,” adding, “He really works hard. He’s an actor who comes prepared with a lot of material.”
He also opened up about his concerns regarding his acting career. “In the past, I used to worry, ‘What if I don’t get cast?’ but I feel much more at ease now than I did back then,” he said. “I hope to approach my acting career with a more relaxed mindset; even if I haven’t let go of everything yet, I think I’ll be able to accept whatever comes my way with ease.”
He continued, “However, I do want to keep acting, even if it’s just a small role,” and confessed, “I really love being on set.” He explained, “For me, the set is a place with a lot of pressure and stress, but it’s also where I get the biggest rush of endorphins. I get annoyed, I feel happy—it seems to encompass the full range of emotions. I do want to stay there, even if it’s just in a small role.”
