(Photo courtesy of Triple Pictures) Distributor Triple Pictures released a recommendation for *The Face of Photography* from Director Park Chan-wook on the 3rd. “The Face of Photography” is a photodocumentary that explores the life and work of Shisei Kuwabara, a 90-year-old Japanese photojournalism master who documented the modern history of the Korean Peninsula through 100,000 photographs taken over 60 years. Director Park Chan-wook, who revealed that he has admired Shisei Kuwabara since his college days in the 1980s, stated, “As a documentary film, this work was created with an attitude that seemed to emulate Mr. Shisei Kuwabara’s dedication,” adding, “Moreover, the fact that it was created by a Korean director is moving in and of itself.” He expressed his admiration, saying, “I was well aware that he never failed to visit historical sites and always documented them with the utmost dedication, but seeing his work compiled like this, I was reminded anew that, beyond his realism, he had honed an exceptional aesthetic sensibility in the framing and composition of his photographs.” Director Park expressed his deep respect, saying, “His wide-ranging interests—spanning history, environmental issues, and politics—and the dedication with which he devoted his entire life to a single field—this was a precious opportunity to learn from all of that.” In addition to Director Park Chan-wook, others praised the film: “A film that is so beautiful and deeply moving” (photographer Koo Bon-chang); “Whenever I look at Shisei Kuwabara’s photographs, I find myself wondering where he was standing at that moment. Just as people have faces, so do photographs. I bow my head before this weary chronicler, now in his nineties, and his sincere testimony.”(Photographer Noh Sun-taek), “I hope everyone interested in photography will put down their cameras today and watch this photo-documentary. Within two hours, this film encapsulates the life of a photographer and nearly every question and answer about the photographer’s craft. It brings tears to my eyes.” (Photographer Seong Nam-hoon)—such high praise for *The Face of Photography* continues to pour in from South Korea’s leading photographers.
