[Edaily Starin, Reporter Choi Hee-jae ] Director Christopher Nolan’s film “The Martian” has surpassed 10 million viewers, becoming the 35th film in history to reach that milestone. Among films released this year, it is the second to reach 10 million viewers—following “The Man Who Lives with the King”—and the first foreign film to do so this year.

According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated computer network on the 6th, “The Martian” surpassed 10 million cumulative viewers around 4:00 p.m. on the 6th, 33 days after its release.

With this achievement, “The Odyssey” became the 35th film in history to reach 10 million viewers. Following “The Man Who Lives with the King,” which became the first film this year to surpass 10 million viewers on March 6, “The Odyssey” marks the second film to reach this milestone in about six months. It is also the first foreign film this year to reach 10 million viewers.

This is also a significant milestone for director Nolan. “The Odyssey” is the second of Nolan’s films to surpass 10 million viewers in South Korea, following “Interstellar,” which was released in 2014. Notably, “The Odyssey” reached the 10-million-viewer mark 17 days faster than “Interstellar,” making it the fastest of Nolan’s films to achieve this milestone in South Korea.

It surpassed 9 million viewers in just 27 days—less than a month after its release—making it the second foreign film to reach the 9-million mark in South Korea since the pandemic, following *Avatar: The Way of Water*. It also surpassed the final box office totals of the top-grossing foreign films in each of the past three years: “Elemental” (2023, 7.24 million viewers), “Inside Out 2” (2024, 8.79 million viewers), and “Zootopia 2” (2025, 8.61 million viewers).

Since its release on the 5th of last month, “The Odyssey” has sparked a phenomenon by topping the overall box office—including weekend figures—for five consecutive weeks. “The Odyssey” is the first film in cinematic history to be shot entirely with IMAX film cameras, and it brought Odysseus’s epic journey to life by making extensive use of real locations and physical sets. A craze for repeat viewings is also continuing, particularly in special theaters such as IMAX and 4DX.

“The Odyssey” tells the story of Odysseus (played by Matt Damon), the hero who led the Trojan War to victory after a decade-long conflict, as he embarks on a journey to return to his wife Penelope (played by Anne Hathaway) and his son Telemachus (played by Tom Holland). A star-studded cast of leading Hollywood actors—including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya Coleman, and Charlize Theron—delivered powerful performances.
