[Edaily Reporter Park Jung-Soo ] The KOSPI surged by more than 4%. Major semiconductor stocks, including SamsungElectronics(005930)and SK hynix(000660), rose across the board on expectations for the launch of OpenAI’s next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) model, “Astra,” driving the index higher.
According to MP Doctor on the 7th, the KOSPI closed at 6,995.39, up 4.61% (308.18 points) from the previous trading day.
Kang Jin-hyuk, an analyst at Shinhan Investment Securities, noted, “Despite the slump in big tech, expectations of entering the AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) era through OpenAI’s next-generation model, ‘GPT-6 Astra,’ stimulated investment sentiment in AI infrastructure.” He added, “In tandem with the strength in U.S. memory stocks, SamsungElectronics and SK hynix rose in Korea, driving the index higher.”
By investor type, during regular trading hours, retail investors sold 6.8212 trillion won worth of stocks, but foreign and institutional investors drove the index higher by buying 2.5869 trillion won and 2.6327 trillion won worth of shares, respectively. Program trading recorded a net purchase of 1.8602 trillion won, combining both arbitrage and non-arbitrage trades.
By sector, machinery and equipment, as well as electrical and electronics, jumped more than 6%, while the manufacturing sector rose in the 5% range. The construction sector rose more than 4%, and the financial sector rose in the 3% range. Retail and insurance also posted gains of more than 2%. In contrast, food, beverages, and tobacco fell in the 2% range, while real estate and textiles and apparel fell more than 1%.
While most of the top-market-cap stocks rose, DOOSAN ENERBILITY(034020)surged by more than 10%, and SK hynix(000660) and SKSQUARE(402340) jumped by around 8%. SamsungElectronics(005930)rose by more than 5%, and Samsung Life Insurance(032830) and SAMSUNG C&T CORPORATION(028260) posted gains in the 4% range. SamsungElectroMechanics(009150) and ShinhanFinancialGroup Co.,Ltd.(055550) rose by more than 3%, while HyundaiMotor(005380) and KB Financial Group(105560) rose by around 2%. In contrast, HANWHA AEROSPACE(012450)fell by about 1%.
On the KOSPI market, 478 stocks rose—including one that hit the daily upper price limit—while 381 stocks fell. No stocks hit the daily lower price limit, and 52 stocks closed unchanged. KOSPI trading volume for the day totaled 237.91 million shares, with a total trading value of 21.4696 trillion won.
The KOSDAQ market closed at 822.19, up 1.07% (8.69 points) from the previous trading day. Among the top market-cap stocks, gains were the norm, with JUSUNG ENGINEERING Co.,Ltd.(036930) and HPSP Co., Ltd.(403870) rising by over 4%, while EO Technics Co., Ltd.(039030), LEENO Industrial Inc(058470), WONIK IPS Co.,Ltd.(240810), and ISC Co., LTD.(095340) all rose by more than 2%.
On the 7th, as the KOSPI closed up more than 4.6%, a display board in the Hana Bank trading room in Jung-gu, Seoul, showed the KOSPI, KOSDAQ, and the won/dollar exchange rate.
