[Edaily Starin YUN GI BACK Reporter] K-pop has now risen beyond being merely a “guest performer” at major South American music festivals to become a core genre headlining the main stage. “Rock in Rio,” Brazil’s premier music festival that began with rock music at its forefront, will feature K-pop artists at the center of the main stage for the first time in its 41-year history. This is a symbolic moment, as K-pop’s fanbase and ticket-selling power—extending beyond the U.S., Europe, and Japan to South America—are breaking down the genre boundaries of traditional music festivals.

◇ K-Pop Under the Banner of “Rock”… A Fandom Stronger Than the Genre
According to the official Rock in Rio schedule released on the 10th, K-pop artists including NEXZ, Hwasa, and Stray Kids will take the main stage, “Palco Mundo,” one after another on the 11th (local time). Stray Kids will close out the day as the headliner.
Locals are effectively treating this day as “K-pop Day.” Brazilian media outlet UOL highlighted the main stage appearances by NEXZ, Hwasa, and Stray Kids, noting that this year’s Rock in Rio has dedicated an entire day to K-pop for the first time in 41 years. In particular, with the permission to bring in light sticks—a symbol of K-pop concert culture—observers note that fandom culture itself has now made its way into major local festivals.
What makes this lineup so eye-catching goes beyond the mere fact that three K-pop groups are performing at the same festival. “Falco Mundo” is Rock in Rio’s iconic stage, where world-renowned rock and pop stars such as the Foo Fighters, Avenged Sevenfold, and Elton John have headlined. On the first weekend of this year’s festival, the Foo Fighters and Elton John each closed out their respective days.
This time, Stray Kids will take that spot. Considering that NEXZ and Hwasa are also scheduled to perform on the main stage on the same day, this signifies that K-pop is no longer merely a peripheral genre contributing to the festival’s diversity but is now recognized as a core attraction that draws in audiences.
This also aligns with the evolution of Rock in Rio itself. Launched in 1985 as a festival centered on rock music, it has expanded its scope over time to include pop, hip-hop, and electronic music. This year, artists such as Calvin Harris, the Black Eyed Peas, Maroon 5, Demi Lovato, and J Balvin will take the stage on other days. Although it’s called “Rock in Rio,” its true competitive edge has come to hinge less on a specific genre and more on its ability to attract global artists with strong fan bases.

◇Beyond the U.S. and Japan to South America… K-pop’s Next Market
Above all, the shift taking place in Brazil is noteworthy. While K-pop has traditionally built its major tour market around North America and Japan, the scale of its concerts and fanbase has been growing rapidly in Central and South America as well. This year’s Rock in Rio lineup demonstrates that the South American K-pop fanbase, which originated online, has grown to the point where it influences the selection of headliners and main stage performers at major festivals.
The fact that Stray Kids headlined the final performance, followed by Hwasa and NEXZ appearing consecutively on the same main stage, encapsulates this shift. Notably, this marks NEXZ’s debut performance in Brazil. The fact that not only stars who have already established a local presence but also new-generation K-pop groups have made their way onto the core stages of South America’s premier festival serves as a clear example of K-pop’s expanding reach.
Rock in Rio’s first “K-Pop Day” is yet another indicator of how much K-Pop has grown in the global music market. Whereas in the past, the mere fact that a K-Pop artist was performing at a major international festival was news in itself, K-Pop has now reached the stage where it fills an entire day of the festival and takes the final stage. As K-Pop transcends genre boundaries, its next competitive edge lies in its fandom and performance capabilities—the ability to move audiences anywhere.
