[Edaily Reporter Kang Min-koo ] kakaopay(377300)has demonstrated the potential of a payment ecosystem utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) agents not only as technology for buyers but also as a sales tool that helps sellers generate revenue.

kakaopay has conducted proof-of-concept (PoC) tests of its “Agentic Payment” technology from both the “buyer” and “seller” perspectives.

Agentic Payment refers to a system where a user grants an AI agent a wallet with predefined policies—such as purchase authorization and spending limits—and the AI agent then independently determines which resources (e.g., goods, services, or data) to purchase and completes the payment within those parameters. Technically, it is based on global web payment protocols such as x402.

The Agent-based Payment technology kakaopay demonstrated in this pilot connects the user’s Agent AI to kakaopay’s wallet and payment infrastructure, enabling payments via stablecoins. It implements all processes required for Agent-based Payment, including wallet integration, payment processing, settlement, management of balances, limits, and policies, as well as communication with the agent.

The user experience on kakaopay remains unchanged. Users can view their AI agent’s payment history, limits, and transaction details within the kakaopay app they already use.

Monetization features for merchants have also been validated. This feature allows merchants with web resources—such as APIs—to sell data to external AI agents based on stablecoin payments and settlements when requested. For example, if a company that holds star-rating data from a map service or weather information adopts the Agent-based Payment monetization feature, it can easily sell that data to AI agents that need it.

kakaopay has implemented the technology so that sellers can begin sales and settlements with AI agents simply by installing this monetization feature, without any complicated processes. Since it is linked to kakaopay’s merchant wallets and business accounts, sellers can also view sales records and other details in real time via the dedicated dashboard provided by kakaopay.

Following the technology demonstration, kakaopay plans to strengthen user protection measures in line with domestic digital asset regulations while promoting the commercialization and widespread adoption of agent-based payment technology.
