New York Stock Market Rebounds Overnight Despite Base Rate Hike
Bank of Japan to Announce Interest Rate Decision… Rate Hike Likely
[E-Daily Reporter Kwon Oh Seok ] Despite the fallout from the U.S. Federal Reserve’s (Fed) interest rate hike, the New York stock market managed to rebound overnight, and the KOSPI also opened higher, buoyed by positive momentum from the U.S. An employee works in the Hana Bank trading room in Jung-gu, Seoul, on the 18th. (Photo = Yonhap News) According to MP Doctor on the 18th, the KOSPI opened at 6,885.70, up 170.29 points (2.54%) from the previous trading day, and as of 9:28 a.m., it was trading at 6,874.38, up 158.97 points (2.37%). So far today, retail investors are the only group showing net selling on the KOSPI market, with net sales totaling 373.7 billion won, while foreign and institutional investors are showing net buying of 37.2 billion won and 215.0 billion won, respectively. By trading type, combined arbitrage and non-arbitrage trades show a net buying position of 149.7 billion won. Earlier, on the first trading day following the U.S. Federal Reserve’s (Fed) first interest rate hike in three years and two months, the New York stock market actually rebounded sharply. On the 17th (local time), the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 51,778.04 on the New York Stock Exchange, up 0.61% from the previous trading day. The S&P 500 index rose 1.14% to 7,637.76, and the Nasdaq Composite Index jumped 1.69% to 26,418.30. Tech stocks led the rally, with Nvidia and Amazon each rising more than 2%. Stock prices rebounded as both international oil prices and U.S. Treasury yields—which had initially weighed on the market—fell simultaneously. At its regular Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, the U.S. Federal Reserve raised the benchmark interest rate by 0.25 percentage points to a range of 3.75% to 4.00% per annum. It also hinted at the possibility of further rate hikes within the year. Nevertheless, the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note fell from 5% to the 4.9% range, easing pressure on the market. In addition, the Bank of England’s (BOE) decision to keep interest rates unchanged provided some relief to global bond markets. While concerns remain that the Fed has shifted toward monetary tightening, there is a growing sense that a strong economy and robust corporate earnings can withstand further rate hikes. Consequently, SamsungElectronics(005930)is trading at 260,000 won, up 7,500 won (2.97%) from the previous trading day, while SK hynix(000660)is trading at 1,827,000 won, up 82,000 won (4.70%), with both stocks rising in tandem. Han Ji-young, an analyst at KIWOOM Securities, stated, “Following the September FOMC meeting, with U.S. 10-year yields stabilizing, news of a successful rebound in the U.S. stock market—led by semiconductors—and the KOSPI overnight futures trading up around 2.9%, the market is expected to remain strong as it digests the Bank of Japan (BOJ) meeting during the trading session.” The market widely expects the Bank of Japan to raise interest rates as well. Meanwhile, the KOSDAQ opened at 832.72, up 10.54 points (1.28%) from the previous trading day, and is currently trading at 828.63, up 6.45 points (0.78%) at the same time.
