[E-Daily Starin Choi Hee-jae Reporter] World-renowned director Alfonso Cuarón is visiting South Korea for the first time.

The 31st Busan International Film Festival announced on the 18th that “Director Alfonso Cuarón’s first visit to Korea has been confirmed.”
Director Alfonso Cuarón won the Best Screenplay Award at the 2001 Venice International Film Festival for *Y Tu Mamá También* (2001) and the Golden Lion Award at the 2018 Venice International Film Festival for *Roma* (2018). He is also a master filmmaker who has won the Academy Award for Best Director twice, for *Gravity* (2013) and *Roma*.
He first caught Hollywood’s attention with *Y Tu Mamá También* (2001) by capturing the essence of youth, changed the tone of the massive *Harry Potter* franchise with *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban* (2004), and In the sci-fi film *Children of Men* (2006), he created a harrowing sense of realism with long takes that seemed to plunge the audience right into the midst of war and chaos, thereby opening up new possibilities for the visual grammar of modern cinema.
Recently, he also attracted attention by serving as an executive producer on director Yeon Sang-ho’s film *Revelation* (2025).
Director Cuarón will attend the opening ceremony to greet the audience for the first time, host a special talk following the IMAX screening of “Gravity,” and lead a separate master class. Director Cuarón, who has drawn audiences deep into the characters’ time and emotions through character-focused cinematography, restrained editing, and direction, is set to speak personally about his cinematic choices. *Gravity*, which earned him the Academy Award for Best Director, was also co-written with his son, director Jonas Cuarón.

Director Jonas Cuarón’s new film, *Gavacho Champion*, which has been invited to the World Cinema section, will also have its Asian premiere at the Busan International Film Festival. Audiences will have the opportunity to experience the cinematic worlds of both Cuaróns in one place. Since co-writing the screenplay for *Gravity*, Jonas Cuarón has built his own filmography by directing films such as *El Desierto* (2015) and *My Friend the Chupacabra* (2023).
Starring Juan Daniel García Treviño, Eddie Masan, and Rosario Dawson, *Gavacho Champion* offers a humorous yet incisive portrayal of the life of a Mexican immigrant struggling to survive in the United States.
Jonas Cuarón served as a producer alongside Alfonso Cuarón and Gabriela Rodríguez through their production company, Esperantofilmo, with Nicolás Selis also serving as a producer. A Q&A session with the director will follow the screening.
The 31st Busan International Film Festival will be held from October 6 to October 15 at the Busan Cinema Center and throughout Busan.
